During the first quarter of play for the DeLand Bullpup junior-varsity football team at the Oct. 3 game against the Bullpups of Flagler Palm Coast High School, things didn't go well, as Flagler Palm Coast controlled the play while scoring a touchdown to take an early lead, 7-0. DeLand only touched the ball twice during the first period of play.

However, things turned around quickly in the second quarter, as DeLand tied and went ahead, 14-7, at halftime.

The local Bullpups found Keyonta Alexander taking the ball into the end zone on a 1-yard run, with Nikolai Weitz kicking the extra point. Four-and-a-half minutes later, with 3.6 seconds left in the half, quarterback Jackson Tapp took an 8-yard run into the end zone, with Weitz again kicking the extra point.

In the second half, DeLand kept the pressure on, scoring in the third period, with Alexander getting his second TD of the night on an 8-yard run, with Weitz kicking the extra point to end the third quarter, 21-7.

There were all kinds of action in the final period of play, with each team scoring 13 points. EJ Gordon rushed the ball 1 yard for the touchdown, while Zach Banton later took a 50-yard pass from Carsyn Daquino for the last DeLand TD. Weitz made one of two attempts for the PAT kick.

Flagler's Bullpups were not done either, as they made an 8-yard run for a TD, and a 52-yard pass for their final score. Their kicker made one of two kicks for the extra PAT.

Gordon was the leading ground-gainer for DeLand, as he gained 52 yards on eight attempts. Alexander added another 45 yards on five attempts.

At the end of the game, with less than a minute to play, DeLand used David Powell as a running back. He excited the crowd by gaining 40 yards on four plays.

On defense, DeLand was led by Elijah Melendez with seven tackles, four of which were for losses. Banton also collected four, while Alexander had three, with two of those being for a loss. Qwayne Harris also had an interception in the second period of play, which got DeLand on the move offensively.

The DeLand team will have a week off and then come back to play host to Orange City University for their last game of the season. This game was originally scheduled to be played at University, but it has been moved back to DeLand at the Sperling Sports Complex off of Marsh Road. This game will be played at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17.
