High-school cross-country kicked off its 2018 season with DeLand and Pine Ridge visiting the Spikes and Spurs Invitational in Bunnell, sponsored by Flagler Palm Coast. The boys’ competition had 30 teams with 633 running the 5,000-meter race, while the girls’ competition had 25 teams and 488 competitors.
The Jacksonville Bolles teams claimed first in both championships.
The DeLand boys were 16th, while the Lady Bulldogs were 21st. The Pine Ridge boys finished 29th.
Other male teams in East Volusia were Seabreeze at seventh; Flagler Palm Coast, 17th; and Port Orange Atlantic, 20th. East Volusia girl teams were Spruce Creek, 15th; Flagler Palm Coast, 17th; and Seabreeze, 20th.
The two race-winners ran elite times, with the boys’ race won by Chase Condra of Peachtree Ridge High School at 15:46.69, while Ashley Klingenberg of Lake Brantley ran a 19:06.08 to outrun all the other girls.
The DeLand boys were led by junior Dillon Wilson-Beck in 58th place, with a time of 17:58.98. The other Bulldog boys to score team points (the top-five runners score points) were Preston Johns, Ethan Myrick, Kevin Johnson and Arthur Francisco.
The DeLand girls were led by senior Madison Skelton finishing 70th, with a time of 23:08.96. The other Lady Bulldogs gaining team points were Emma Toledo, Abby Koshiol, Emilee Nunn and Cheyenne Dunn.
The Deltona Pine Ridge boys were led by junior Sean McNeil in 158th place, with a clocking of 20:09.70. Some of his teammates helping create a team score were Joshua Anderson, Dimitrios Diaz, Christian Irizarry and Chris Zelaya.
On Saturday, Sept. 8, many of the local teams will be headed to Titusville to compete in the Astronaut Invitational at 8 a.m. The following week, DeLand travels to Bartram Trail High School in the Jacksonville area to compete in the Bale and Trail Original Invitational at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15.
