The DeLand High School Bulldog cross-country team placed fourth out of 20 teams at the annual DeLand Cross-Country Invitational on the course at the Sperling Sports Complex.
The Bulldog boys were led by senior AJ Williams, who finished 11th overall with a clocking of 17:23.80 for the 5,000-meter race, or the equivalent of 3.1 miles. Helping the Bulldogs to their fourth-place finish were his teammates Dillon Wilson-Beck, Caleb Roberts, Ethan Myrick and Kevin Johnson.
The team title went to Oviedo with 58 points, while DeLand scored 133 points. The top-five runners create a team score.
Other local teams participating were Seabreeze in second place, New Smyrna Beach in eighth, Port Orange Atlantic in 10th, Taylor Middle-High in 12th, Spruce Creek in 14th, Pine Ridge in 16th, Orange City University in 17th and Deltona in 20th.
The next-best finish by a West Volusia athlete was turned in by senior Jacob Alejo from Taylor, with a time of 17:30.10. Other local top-finishers were junior Chandler Base of Orange City University at 19:22.60, sophomore Joshua Anderson of Pine Ridge at 19:32.60, and junior Pineda Carlos of Deltona at 23.56.80.
The DeLand girls finished ninth overall, with Lake Brantley taking the team title. DeLand and Taylor were the only two teams representing West Volusia, but Deltona, Pine Ridge and University had individual runners.
Other local team finishes found Spruce Creek in seventh, Seabreeze in 10th, Mainland in 12th, New Smyrna Beach in 14th and Taylor in 15th.
Senior Madison Skelton led the Lady Bulldogs with a run of 22:33.30; however, Pine Ridge senior Kortnee Powers turned in the best time for the westside with a 22:09.90. University sophomore Paige Boucher ran the race in a time of 22:27.30, while Taylor eighth-grader Vanessa Alejo toured the course in 24:28.20. Deltona junior Megan Boyle led the Wolf runners at 28:53.60.
