Instead of spending an evening cooking, take the night off and enjoy a meal at the Pad Thai Cafe.

With a cozy intimate atmosphere, elegant wallpaper from Thailand, outdoor seating, and serene background music, owner and chef Celine Onying has transformed a previous pizzeria into a Thai paradise.

“It was quite a bit of work converting a pizzeria into a Thai restaurant,” said Gary Folley, a friend of the owner. “It had to be almost completely renovated, but it looks quite beautiful now.”

Celebrating their grand opening this month, the Pad Thai Cafe has taken the spot of Dobro’s previous location, adding something new to the DeLand restaurant scene.

Originally from Thailand, owner Celine Onying lived in Alaska for 15 years, and opened two restaurants, before moving to Florida to open the Pad Thai Cafe.

Serving everything from appetizers and entrees to desserts, the Cafe is the perfect place to come for lunch, takeout, or even a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner for two.

“The Pad Thai Cafe is something different for couples to experience than what they are usually used to,” said Gary. “There is a wide variety of menu items to choose from, a selection of wine and beer, and the restaurant is also quite romantic.” They will also be offering a free mango sticky rice to Valentine’s Day customers for dessert.

Featuring authentic Thai cuisine, the Cafe uses only the best ingredients to make their meals. “Celine is going all out with what she uses to make her dishes,” said Gary. “You won’t find any small shrimp on your plate. If you order a seafood dish here, there will be jumbo shrimp, with big fat prawns, mussels, and squid as well.”

With a name like the Pad Thai Cafe, it’s no surprise that the most popular dish on the menu is the pad thai. Some of the other popular dishes include the tom kha, which is a coconut cream soup, the basil fried rice, and the lamb massaman curry.

The Pad Thai Cafe is located at 658 W. New York Ave. in DeLand. Their hours are 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.
