Get ready to be greeted by an array of Italian delicacies the second you step into Rosalie’s Italian Deli and Subs. Far from your average sub shop, Rosalie’s serves up much more than the typical deli meats and cheeses that most sandwich shops have. Instead, what they offer is a variety of menu items you would usually have to go to a formal Italian restaurant to receive.

“We do a lot of food that people can’t normally get,” said owner and cook Michael Stridacchio, “like our pasta fagioli, stuffed peppers, and the house special, eggplant rollatini, which is fried eggplant rolled with garlic, ricotta and mozzarella.”

“We also have all kinds of pastas, lasagna, chicken parmigiana, as well as freshly made potato salad, pasta salad, and coleslaw,” Stridacchio said. “We make everything ourselves; nothing is can bought.”

Originally from Hazlet, New Jersey, Stridacchio learned how to cook from his parents.

“My mom always wanted me to open something like this,” said Stridacchio. “Before she passed, she would ask me every night, ‘Did you get the deli yet?’”

“I was doing everything I could to make it happen,” Stridacchio said. And, after only a few setbacks, he did. “I got the keys, and Mom was so happy,” Stridacchio recalled, “but the next day she got sick.”

After a slew of doctors and hospital visits, hospice was called. “I signed her out, took her home, and tried to make her as comfortable as possible,” Stridacchio said.

On Oct. 9, 2018, Rosalie passed away. However, with the help of family, friends and local cooks, Rosalie’s recipes are brought to life every day at Rosalie’s Italian Deli and Subs.

Going to Rosalie’s is just like going to Stridacchio’s home for dinner. “My favorite thing to eat here is the spaghetti and meatballs,” Stridacchio said with a smile. “It’s funny because it’s such an easy thing, but I love it.”

While the spaghetti and meatballs are a definite favorite, the most popular menu item is the sausage, peppers and onions. “I make 10 to 15 of those subs a day,” Stridacchio said. “People love it because it’s all fresh.”

Rosalie’s Italian Deli and Subs gives a 10-percent discount to teachers, EMTs, police, firefighters, nurses and the military as a way to give back to the community.
