The Deltona Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee and the City of Deltona will host its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Weekend Celebration.
The Dreamkeepers Annual Breakfast Celebration on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at The Center at Deltona located at 1640 Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd, Deltona, FL. Breakfast serving time is 8:30 and the program starts at 9:00 a.m. and will feature guest speaker:
RODNEY L. HURST, Sr. Civil Rights Activist - Black Historian - Author
Rodney Lawrence Hurst, Sr. is the award winning author of, "It Was Never About a Hot Dog and a Coke®!" and "Unless WE Tell It. .. It Never Gets Told!" He is a native of Jacksonville, Florida and writes with clarity and a historical eye. Both of Hurst's books detail the times, the mood, and the people of Northeast Florida. He also chronicles the rich legacy of Jacksonville's Black history.
Hurst has dedicated his life to fighting injustices and documenting what it has meant, and continues to mean, to be living while Black in the United States.
Master of Ceremony will be Deltona's Deputy City Manager, Dr. Marc-Antonie Cooper. The "I Have A Dream" speech will be delivered by Elijah Whitaker, 6th grader from Deltona Middle School. Prizes will be awarded to student finalists who participated in the King Celebration Contest.
Winners will be recognized and receive a monetary award at the 2020 Breakfast Celebration. The Breakfast tickets ($10) must be purchased in advance. Tables seat 8 people.
