The Deltona, DeBary, Orange City Rotary Club was able to pull off what President Erika Benfield called “a miracle” April 15, by giving away toilet paper to those in need.

“Rotary has distributed water during hurricane season and dictionaries for children, but never thought we’d do toilet paper to help our friends and neighbors,” Benfield said.

The Rotary Club was able to purchase a large quantity of toilet tissue from a commercial distributor, and worked with the City of DeBary and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8093 to stage the giveaway at the VFW Post on Charles Richard Beall Boulevard in DeBary.

Benfield said the line of cars stretched to the back of the VFW building, and 500 takers got toilet paper during the four-hour event.

Another drive-thru giveaway is planned 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, at Orange City United Methodist Church, 396 E. University Ave., in cooperation with the City of Orange City and the church.

Benfield, who is also vice mayor of DeBary, expressed gratitude for all those who helped.

“I would like to acknowledge all the volunteers and smiles we received back, and hopefully inspire others to safely help their citizens, neighbors and families in need in other cities,” she said.
