Arts & Entertainment: ‘Christmas in Bloom’ features Gingerbread Contest

MAKING GINGERBREAD — Sarah Thorncroft, executive director of the West Volusia Historical Society, stirs some gingerbread batter with an overgrown sock monkey. Sock monkeys came about during World War I, when those at home made socks for soldiers who were fighting in trenches where their feet remained wet most of the time. In time, these socks, made into monkeys, became a popular toy.
