West New York Avenue is closed between Florida and Clara avenues after a motorist hit a fire hydrant overnight Wednesday into Thursday.

According to DeLand city spokesman Chris Graham, two concrete panels on the road also needed to be repaired.

Detours are in place, directing motorists around the site.

As of Thursday afternoon, Graham said crews continued to work on the damaged road.

"Crews have made tremendous progress on New York Avenue," said Graham. "The concrete pads are set to be poured early Friday morning so it is likely the road will be closed through Friday. As it is a state-maintained road, the Florida Department of Transportation will make the final determination when the road is safe to be reopened, but we will pass along that information when the road is reopened to traffic."
