A number of prominent law firms headquartered in Daytona Beach or Orlando have satellite offices in DeLand or elsewhere in West Volusia. But none of them has emblazoned the firm’s name on a high-rise building.

Until now.

Morgan & Morgan, a personal-injury law firm based in Orlando, has opened an office on the third floor of New York Plaza at 100 E. New York Ave., which for many years was known as the Dreka Building. The building is on the southeast corner of New York Avenue and Woodland Boulevard.

Eighteen-inch-tall letters spell out the firm’s name between the second and third floors on the sides of the building facing both major thoroughfares. The lettering went up in mid-September, according to Michael J. Smith, a partner and attorney in the firm’s Tavares office who oversees Morgan & Morgan’s expansions outside of Orlando.

The cost of the naming rights was rolled into the lease, Smith said, and was not a separate expenditure.

The DeLand office is a result of client growth in Morgan & Morgan’s Daytona Beach office, said the founder of the firm, John Morgan, well-known for his television ads as being “for the people.”

“We were really outgrowing our Daytona office, and so many of our clients are from West Volusia, so we opened an office here,” Morgan told The Beacon. “Anytime we open a new location, we almost double our business. People want to be close to their lawyer.”

According to its website, www.forthepeople.com, Morgan & Morgan has 41 offices, 23 of which are in Florida, stretching from Miami to Jacksonville to Pensacola and everywhere in between. The firm also has 17 offices in nine other Southeastern states and one in Boston.

The DeLand office, which opened in July, hosted an open house soiree recently to mark its official opening. The office is staffed by attorney Martin Jaffe, who is supported by about a half-dozen paralegals, case managers and secretaries, Morgan said.

In all, according to the website, Morgan & Morgan has more than 350 attorneys, many of them designated as “Super Lawyers” who have received the esteemed AV Rating, the highest level of professional excellence obtained only by peer review.
