The West Volusia Beacon and its landlord, Conrad Realty Co., recently partnered to install a wireless, internet-enabled weather station on the rooftop of the company’s main building, at 110-114 W. New York Ave., in the heart of Downtown DeLand.

The station was installed July 26 and immediately began sending live observations about the area’s weather to popular weather website Weather Underground.

More than 250,000 Personal Weather Stations, such as The Beacon’s, are part of the website’s network, in addition to official observations from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration sites.

The new station is listed on the site as the “Downtown DeLand/The Beacon/Artisan Alley” station, and under its station ID KFLDELAN28.

The Beacon’s station is the only weather station listed on the site in Downtown DeLand. The station can be accessed by searching for weather in DeLand, Florida, or a nearby city, clicking “Change Station,” and choosing the new station, either from the map or the list presented.

Alternatively, users can view live and historic observations from the station at www.goo.gl/Csg13U.

The station hardware, an Ambient Weather WS-0900-IP, measures wind speed, wind direction, rainfall, barometric pressure, indoor and outdoor temperature and humidity, dew point, heat index, wind chill and more.

“We saw installing the weather station, which everyone can access and use, as one more way to demonstrate our commitment to building and helping this community in whatever ways we can,” said Barb Shepherd, who is president of both the newspaper company, Mustard Seed Publishing Inc., and Conrad Realty Co., which owns The Beacon’s building and the other buildings along Artisan Alley.

“It’s a simple thing, but it speaks to the missions of both of our companies. The Beacon is all about providing folks with interesting, useful local information,” she added. “Conrad Realty Co. tries to elevate and promote Downtown DeLand as a great place to work, shop and live.”

The station will provide a way for people around the world to learn a little more about Downtown DeLand’s environment.

“Now, the world can dial up Downtown DeLand any time on the internet and check out our weather,” said Shepherd.

The station was installed by Ken Goldberg Construction Company LLC of DeLand, which often performs work for Conrad Realty Co.
