Members of the community are welcome to write letters to the editor for publication on any topic. Letters must be signed, and you must provide your telephone number and town of residence, for verification purposes. Only your name and town of residence will be published.
Only rarely will we withhold a letter-writer's name, at his or her request, either to protect a minor, or because the letter-writer has a legitimate fear of retribution. Even letter-writers who request anonymity must provide their names and contact information, for the editor's use. The editor will contact you to discuss your request for anonymity, and your name will not be published unless you give the OK. Unsigned letters will be discarded.
The DeLand-Deltona Beacon does not censor letters because we don't agree with the opinions expressed. Our Opinions page is an open forum for the West Volusia community. However, we may not be able to publish your letter if it contains facts we cannot verify, and we may choose to not publish criticism of a private citizen. (Please feel free to criticize public officials!) Also, we do not limit the length of letters, but because space is limited, shorter letters are almost always published more quickly.
If you would rather express your opinions without following the guidelines for publication, feel free to join our Community Forum.
