DELEON SPRINGS - Jan Paul Adams, 59, died July 23, 2010, at Florida Hospital-DeLand.
Born in Chandler, Okla., on Oct. 2, 1950, Mr. Adams was a maintenance and repair HVAC specialist, and served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper during the Vietnam War.

DELAND - John P. Booth Jr., 89, a former resident of Charlestown, R.I., died July 21, 2010, at the West Volusia Hospice Care Center in Orange City.
Mr. Booth worked at C&I Land Sales.
He served as a lieutenant in the Coast Guard serving in the U.D.T. unit as a frogman during World War II, and was honored by the U.S. government in 1998 at Fort Bragg, Va., where he was awarded the Bronze Star and his Green Beret.
Mr. Booth was a member of several Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, and was an active outdoorsman.
He is survived by his daughter, Eugenia Hartnett Thompson and her husband, Larry J., of Jupiter; his longtime companion, Roma Gibb; four brothers, William Booth, Michael John Booth, Robert Booth and Donald Booth, all of DeLand; one sister, Susan Brooks of DeLand; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

DELAND - Harry John “Coach” Meisel, 87, died July 25, 2010. Calling hours and eulogies were scheduled for 5:30-7:30 p.m. today, Thursday, July 29, with a rosary scheduled for 7:30-8 p.m. July 29 at St. Charles Catholic Church, 4001 Edgewater Drive in Orlando. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, July 30, at St. Charles Catholic Church. A reception will follow 11 a.m.-1 p.m. July 30 in the Bishop Moore Catholic High School cafeteria, 3901 Edgewater Drive in Orlando. Burial with military honors will be at 2 p.m. July 30 at Glen Haven Memorial Park, 2300 Temple Drive in Winter Park.
Mr. Meisel was born in Stamford, Conn., to Mae and Harry H. Meisel. On Sept. 3, 1949, he married Jeanette in DeLand.
He is survived by Jeanette, his loving wife of 60 years; his children, Karen Hales and her husband, David, Steve Meisel and his wife, Janice, Cathy Meisel, Kevin Meisel and his wife, Bobbi, and Teresa Crant and her husband, Mike; 10 grandchildren, Rachel, Kevin, Sarah, Julia, Daniel, Brian, Monica, Meghan, Lauren and Evan; his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Pierce; his cousins, Jack Healy and his wife, MaryAnn, and Marianne Fahey; and many nieces and nephews.
Special thanks are sent to the wonderful caregivers at Hospice of the Comforter. Thanks to all family and friends for their love and support. Coach was loved and respected by many, and will be dearly missed by all.

Mr. Nordman was a lifelong DeLand resident, and was married to Patricia for 54 years.
He retired from the U.S. Postal Service, and had grown citrus most of his life. He loved hunting, fishing and sports, played competitive softball until he was 78 years old, and helped coach youth baseball.
Mr. Nordman is survived by his wife, Patricia, and four sons, Richard, Robert, Stephen Daniel and Michael, and seven grandchildren, Mikaela, Austin, Hunter, Fisher, Ann Elise, Juliet and Gardner.

RUSKIN - James C. Robards Sr., 93, a former resident of the Deltona area, died July 25, 2010. A Masonic memorial service officiated by Landmark Lodge No. 383 will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 30, at Baldauff Family Funeral Home, 1233 Saxon Blvd. in Orange City, with interment following at Deltona Memorial Gardens, 1295 Saxon Blvd. in Orange City.
Born on Nov. 26, 1916, in Johnson County, Ind., Mr. Robards was employed at Linkbelt-Rexnord in Indianapolis for more than 38 years.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps.
Mr. Robards was a member of Blackshear Baptist Church in Georgia and Landmark Masonic Lodge No. 383, and was a devoted Shrine member and a member of DeLand Order of the Eastern Star No. 16.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Helen and Gertrude; a son, James Jr.; and a grandson, Steven Fleener. He is survived by two daughters, Patricia Lynn and her husband, Wynston, of Sun City Center, and Betty Rose McCullough of Avon, Ind.; one sister, Elizabeth Jane Francis of Greenwood, Ind.; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

JACKSONVILLE - Gene Ankney Shaulis, 85, died July 22, 2010, at Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville. Memorial-service preparations are currently incomplete.
Mr. Shaulis leaves his wife, Sophie Leosewski Shaulis; his children, Dennis and Charlene Shaulis, Ron and Diann Shaulis Bradley, David Shaulis and his late wife, Nora, and John and Debbie Shaulis Stanberry; his grandchildren, Justin, Lauren, Abbie, Sierra, Savannah, Summer, Griffin, Chloe, Mason, Noah and Marisa; and his great-grandchildren, Bryce and Madylin.
Born on May 13, 1925, in Edie, Pa., the son of Russell and Elda Shaulis, Gene lived in the Somerset, Pa., area until he and Sophie moved to Florida in 1958. He was a 34-year resident of DeLand, until he and Sophie moved to Jacksonville in 1995.
Mr. Shaulis was a decorated veteran who served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War, and was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 6.
In his younger years, Gene enjoyed barnstorming in his Beechcraft airplane, and he never lost his love and enthusiasm for aviation. In his retirement, he enjoyed building and flying radio-controlled airplanes, as well as flying simulators of many types and models of airplanes and jets on his home computer.
He loved to travel, and took many trips with Sophie around and across the United States to visit scenic places and historic landmarks, and also to visit with their children and their families.

Suzanne ‘Suzie’ Bentley Halpin

DELAND - Suzanne “Suzie” Bentley Halpin, 62, died of lung cancer July 17, 2010, at the Halifax Health Hospice West Volusia Care Center in Orange City. A memorial service to celebrate her life was held July 21 at Lankford Funeral Home in DeLand.
Mrs. Halpin grew up in Williamsburg, Va., daughter of the late Robert K. and Jeanne Brady Bentley.
Suzie was a devoted wife and mother. She was quick-witted and fun-loving, and she made friends easily. The epitome of a military wife, she traveled around the globe, superbly maintaining her home and providing totally unselfish, faithful and devoted service to her family and community. She was a Girl Scout leader, a Cub Scout den leader, an assistant coach on numerous youth soccer teams, a school volunteer, and a recipient of numerous recognition awards for her leadership abilities and volunteerism at the various military posts to which she and her husband were assigned.
Mrs. Halpin was presented the Department of the Army Commander’s Award for Public Service for her hard work and dedication toward improving the quality of life of the military families living overseas. She enjoyed crocheting, word and number puzzles, playing cards and games, and caring for the various creatures brought into her home over the years. She always enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Suzie will be greatly missed by her beloved husband, retired Command Sgt. Maj. Robert P. Halpin Jr. of DeLand; her sons, Robert B. Halpin and his wife, Aimee, and David M. Halpin and his wife, Sherry; her grandchildren, Codi Halpin, Caeli Halpin, Kelsi Halpin, Katey Halpin and Natalie Halpin; her sisters, Robin Ward of Eclipse, Va., and Sherry Turpin of Portsmouth, Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

DELAND - Ellen L. Parounagian, 83, went home to be with her Lord July 17, 2010. Mrs. Parounagian was born in Moosic, Pa., on Jan. 28, 1927, the youngest of three girls, to Benjamin and Elizabeth Williams. She came to Florida in 1960 with her family, George, George Jr., Tom and Janice, to escape the cold New York winter. She lived in Miami until 2003, when, after the death of her husband, the family moved to DeLand to be near her son Tom and his family.
While living in Miami, Ellen and George traveled throughout the world. She raised three children, enjoyed gardening and walking every day with her neighborhood walking group. She was active in her church, Jesus Fellowship, for more than 20 years.
In DeLand, Mrs. Parounagian joined Plymouth Avenue Christian Church, and participated in Meals on Wheels, until her health began to fail. Please view her on youtube.com, as she pursued her musical career as Grandma Kruppa, Grandma Bach, Grandma Santana and Grandma Daniels.
She was predeceased by her parents; her sisters, Doris Metz and Jean Williams; a son, U.S. Army 2nd Lt. George Parounagian Jr.; and her husband of 56 years, George Sr. She is survived by a son, Tom Parounagian; a daughter, Janice Parounagian; daughter-in-law Lynn Parounagian; two grandchildren, Emmanuel and Theodore; her dearest friends, Roger and Jayne Morgan; many nieces and nephews; and her dog, Lady, who was amazingly the comfort of her last days.

Born in New Haven, Conn., on Dec. 20, 1937, Mr. Schuler came to DeLand from Texas in 1996.
He served in the U.S. Navy, and was a long-distance truck driver.

DELAND - James L. Shelton, 61, died July 18, 2010, at Florida Hospital-DeLand. Calling hours will be 6-8 p.m. Friday, July 23, at Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home, 126 E. New York Ave. in DeLand. The Rev. Kathy Boyles will officiate at a funeral service at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 24, in the Allen-Summerhill Memorial Chapel in DeLand. Burial at Oakdale Cemetery, on the corner of West Plymouth and North Clara avenues in DeLand, will follow the service. A reception will be held at DeLeon Springs United Methodist Church on Ponce DeLeon Boulevard.
Born in Tulsa, Okla., Mr. Shelton moved to DeLand 50 years ago from Grand Prairie, Texas.
He started his career with the Department of Natural Resources as a park ranger at Blue Spring State Park in Orange City. He transferred to Hontoon Island State Park in DeLand, and ultimately retired in 2007 from DeLeon Springs State Park.
Mr. Shelton was a member of DeLeon Springs United Methodist Church and Halifax Fishing Club in Daytona Beach. He was a state-certified trapper, and loved fishing, the woods, and collecting guns.
He is survived by a son, Robert James Shelton of DeLand; a daughter, Victoria Ann Desmond-Foley of Liverpool, N.Y.; one brother-in-law, Rick Tonyan of DeLeon Springs; and a nephew, Bradley Filkins of New Zealand.

FLOWERY BRANCH, GA. - Phyllis Ann “Shad” Zimmer, 59, a former resident of DeLand, died July 18, 2010, at her home following an extended illness. A funeral service was scheduled for 11:30 a.m. today, Thursday, July 22, in the chapel of Memorial Park South Funeral Home in Flowery Branch. Interment will follow in Memorial Park South Cemetery.
Mrs. Zimmer was born in Indianapolis to the late Ralph E. and Laura Apple Pacey. She was Methodist, and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa and a Past Grand Adah in the Grand Chapter of the Florida Order of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her son James Lucas Zimmer, and a sister, Nancy P. Osteen. She is survived by her husband, F. Robert “Bob” Zimmer of Flowery Branch; two sons and daughters-in-law, Christian and Heather Zimmer of Flowery Branch, and Allen and Crystal Zimmer of Duluth, Ga.; one daughter-in-law, Danyell Zimmer Blalock of Flowery Branch; and one sister, Barbara P. Yamka of Daytona Beach.

ORANGE CITY - Jeffery A. Ford, 57, died July 7, 2010, at home. A celebration of his life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 17, at the DeLand Eagles on East Yorktown Road in DeLand.
Born on Jan. 21, 1953, in Muncie, Ind., Ford moved to Florida with his family when he was a child. He graduated in 1971 from DeLand High School, and in 1973 from Mary Karl Vocational School, with a degree in automotive technology.
He was employed by Florida Power and Light in Sanford, and was the owner and operator of JDA Powder Coating.
Mr. Ford was a member of the American Legion and the Volkswagen Beetle Club, and enjoyed NASCAR racing, fishing, and spending time with his many friends.
He was a member of the Florida National Guard for seven years.
Mr. Ford is survived by his wife, Diana; his daughter, Adrienne Ford of Oviedo; one brother, John and his wife, Jan, of DeLand; two sisters-in-law, Jeri and her husband, Joe, of Crescent City, and Fay and her husband, Cecil, of Deltona; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Dewie. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Jane Ford.

Carolyn H. Mathas

DELAND - Carolyn H. Mathas, born Carolyn Swann Howard, silently broke the chains of this life and ascended into Heaven, while fireworks celebrated freedom on the Fourth of July. She was 81, and timeless. The Rev. Richard Hills will officiate at a memorial service at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 17, at First Presbyterian Church of DeLand, 724 N. Woodland Blvd.
Carolyn was born premature, the “miracle baby” of Elsie and W. Vance Howard on March 23, 1929, in Charlotte, N.C. She grew up in Cary, N.C., where she graduated high school. Subsequently, she graduated with a bachelor’s in education, and settled in DeLand.
Without a doubt, Carolyn’s love for children dictated her career. Teaching elementary-school-age children with patience, love and understanding endeared her to several generations of now-adult children. She began teaching in Williamsburg, Va., and later taught business in Tampa. Most of her 30-year career was spent as a second-grade teacher at George Marks Elementary School in DeLand, from 1970 until her retirement in 1995.
She was a longtime member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, as well as the BF Chapter of PEO. She was honored by her peers as Teacher of the Year in 1985. Retirement gave her the opportunity to reach her greatest degree of personal fulfillment, by being board chairwoman for six of the eight years she served at First Presbyterian Day School in DeLand.
Carolyn was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of DeLand, where she proudly served as a deacon. She was also a member of the Pansy Circle of the DeLand Garden Club, as well as the Junior Service League.
She is survived by her son, Bill Mathas.

Michael Spencer

DELAND - Michael Spencer, 55, died July 10, 2010, with friends and family by his side.
Born in Chicago, Mr. Spencer enjoyed traveling, circling the globe three times, including time on cruise ships as a professional musician. He was self-employed as a musician and a home-restoration specialist. He had also worked for many years as a computer technician and a certified information technologist.
He attended Iowa State University.
Mr. Spencer’s interests included playing the bass, and scuba and free-diving. He especially enjoyed diving in Blue Spring.
He is survived by his stepmother, Suzanne Seaman; his sisters, Carol Reising and Angie Baierle; one brother, Chris West; two daughters, Emily Spencer and Rachael Spencer; and his partner, Dorothy Kopp.
Mr. Spencer was a Unitarian, but also studied other spiritual and religious beliefs including Buddhism.

DELAND - Joan Lee Dragonette, 69, died July 14, 2010. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 17, at St. Peter Catholic Church, 359 W. New York Ave. in DeLand. A gathering of friends and family will be held immediately following the funeral mass a the Alpha Omega Room.
Mrs. Dragonette was born in Akron, Ohio, on June 15, 1941, to Charles and Violet Thomas. She was raised in Northeast Ohio and graduated from Chardon High School, where she met and married her high-school sweetheart. Her husband’s career required numerous relocations, but Joan and her husband settled in DeLand in 1998.
Joan retired from the J.C. Penney Co. where she worked in the fine-jewelry department. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and will be remembered for her love of her family and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her twin sister, Jean Moore. She is survived by her husband and best friend, Robert; her daughter, Catherine Holland and her husband, David, of DeBary; her son, Anthony and his wife, Sarah, of DeLand; her grandchildren, Avery Holland, Cheyenne Dragonette, Nicholas Dragonette and Ashley Dragonette; her sisters, Janet Thomas and Nancy Jamir; and her brother, Charles Thomas Jr.

SORRENTO - Anne Margaret Hamilton, 54, died June 8, 2010. The Rev. Nancy Kline officiated at a memorial service July 11 at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in DeLand.
Mrs. Hamilton was born on Sept. 8, 1955, in Miami Beach.
She enjoyed the mountains of North Carolina and West Virginia, and loved the beaches of Florida.
