DELAND - Dr. Willis D. and Betty B. Bidgood honored
The family of Dr. Willis D. and Betty B. Bidgood will honor them at a service and reception at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, March 13, at First Presbyterian Church of DeLand, 724 N. Woodland Blvd.
Willis Bidgood died Oct. 9, 2000, and Betty Bidgood died Aug. 19, 2009, in New Smyrna Beach. They had been married 51 years at the time of Dr. Bidgood’s death.
The Bidgoods were longtime members of First Presbyterian Church of DeLand. Dr. Bidgood, a general surgeon, practiced in DeLand from 1951 to 1975. He was the first surgical specialist in DeLand, and served at various times as chief of the medical staffs at Fish Memorial Hospital and West Volusia Memorial Hospital, both in DeLand. He was a consummate and deeply caring professional.
Betty Bidgood worked faithfully alongside her husband for many years, as his office manager, and as a medical assistant. They shared a common love of family and raised two children together, always encouraging and supporting the children’s various endeavors. Home life and shared family time were especially important to them. They shared a love of the outdoors, particularly the ocean and the beach, and enjoyed gardening. Additionally, Will liked to fish, made cast nets, and played golf. Betty enjoyed knitting, painting, music and cooking.
The Bidgoods are survived by one son, Dean Bidgood of Chapel Hill, N.C., one daughter, Sara Dunn of Pasadena, Calif., and one daughter-in-law, Diane Bidgood. They have four grandchildren, Sara Garrett and her husband, Brian, Lee Bidgood and his wife, Emily, Emily Bray and her husband, Mark, and Grace Bidgood; and three great-grandchildren, Anna Garrett, Maggie Garrett and Ella Bray.

LOUISVILLE, KY. - Audrey Hazel Ticknor Goodan, 90, died March 10, 2010, in Louisville.
Born in Willoughby, Ohio, Mrs. Goodan lived in DeLand 1967-2003.
She was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, of DeLand, and loved people, especially children. A natural mother, she took care of all she met and touched them with her warmth, humor and generous spirit.
Mrs. Goodan is survived by three children, Edward Goodan, Laura Goodan-Graham and Rita MacWilliam; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother; and friend Gary Jones.

DELAND - Claude E. King Jr., 59, died March 10, 2010, at the West Volusia Hospice Care Center in Orange City. Calling hours will be 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 12, at Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home, 126 E. New York Ave. in DeLand. The Rev. Roger Wright will officiate at a funeral service at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 13, in the Allen-Summerhill Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow at DeLand Memorial Gardens, 600 E. Beresford Ave.
Mr. King was born in Amissville, Va., on July 6, 1950, and moved to West Volusia in 1960.
He was a third-generation owner of Claude King Painting for more than 30 years, and was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in DeLand.
Mr. King was preceded in death in 2007 by his wife, Bevile. He is survived by two sons, Timothy L. of Crawfordville, and Mark A. of Concord, N.C.; two brothers, Chucky of DeLand, and Tommy of Deltona; one sister, Diane Ponder of DeLeon Springs; and six grandchildren.

DELAND - William “Bill” Plummer, 35, died March 2, 2010. A funeral service was held March 7 at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in DeLand.
Mr. Plummer was an air-conditioning technician for Ancient City Heating and Air Conditioning.

Helen Fell Windhorst

DELAND - Helen Fell Windhorst, 98, of Woodland Towers, died March 7, 2010, at Woodland Terrace in DeLand. The Rev. Dr. Bruce Hedgepeth will officiate at a memorial service at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, at First Presbyterian Church of DeLand, 724 N. Woodland Blvd.
Mrs. Windhorst was born on her family’s farm in Coldwater, Ohio, and moved to DeLand with her parents and sister in 1927. She graduated in 1929 from DeLand High School, and in 1931 from Stetson University. She worked for many years at the Putnam Hotel in DeLand.
She married Theodore “Ted” Windhorst in 1938.
Mrs. Windhorst enjoyed traveling, and after her retirement, she visited Europe numerous times, and traveled to Alaska three times. She had a strong faith, and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of DeLand for more than 60 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted. She is survived by one son, Jon Windhorst and his wife, Patti, of Merritt Island; three grandchildren, Sara Windhorst of Winter Springs, Bill Windhorst of Cape Canaveral, and Robert Martin and his wife, Trena, of Rock Hill, S.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Ted and Elizabeth.

DELAND - Althea Louise Griffin, 82, died March 3, 2010.
Born in Milbridge, Maine, Mrs. Griffin and her late husband, Alden Griffin, moved to DeLand 26 years ago from New England. While living in Connecticut, she was a supervisor in several nursing-home facilities. However, the majority of her life was devoted to her husband and eight children. Being a wife and mother was her greatest joy.
Although unable to attend in recent years, she was a member of First United Methodist Church of DeLand.
Mrs. Griffin was also preceded in death by one son, Timothy Griffin. She is survived by three daughters, Priscilla Paul and her husband, Jerry, of Memphis, Tenn., Kathleen Baldwin and her husband, Jerry, of Port Orange, and Bonita Cooper and her husband, Bob, of Henderson, Nev.; four sons, Dennis Griffin and his wife, Becky, and David Griffin, all of New London, Conn., Robert Griffin and his wife, Jan, of Sophia, N.C., and Michael Griffin of DeLand; three sisters, Mary Peterson of DeLand, Madelyn Mitchell of Gorham, Maine, and Phyllis Butler of Suncook, N.H.; one sister-in-law, Roberta Andrews of Old Orchard Beach, Maine; 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

DELTONA - Jack A. Heyen, 67, died Friday, March 5, 2010, at his home. Pastor William Yesse will officiate at a memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 13, at Emmaus Lutheran Church, 2500 S. Volusia Ave. in Orange City.
Mr. Heyen was a sales representative for Express Printing in DeLand. Born in Cleveland, he moved to Deltona in 1988 from New York.
He was a member of Emmaus Lutheran Church in Orange City, where he was a past president and a member of the church council. He was a past president and member of the Kiwanis Club of Deltona, was an Eagle Scout and volunteered for the Boy Scouts of America, and was the first president of the Southwest Volusia Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Heyen is survived by his wife of 45 years, Joann C.; two daughters, Kimberly Eifrid and her husband, Tom, and Christi Denney; his mother, Anabel Heyen; one brother, Joseph; two sisters, Jane Munro and Jean Vogel; and four grandchildren, Megan Eifrid, Mia Eifrid, Jessica Denney and Nichole Denney.

Mr. Lapointe is survived by his wife of 44 years, Dee; Tod Sutherland and family; siblings Raymond, Robert, Roland, Joseph, Maurice, Doris, Jeanette, Beatrice, Alexander Jr., Alfred and Mary Ann; and several nieces and nephews.

LAKE MACK - Joseph Anthony “Joe” Scarfato, 59, died Feb. 27, 2010, at Orlando Regional Medical Center due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 12, at St. Peter Catholic Church, 359 W. New York Ave. in DeLand.
Mr. Scarfato was a carpenter. Born Jan. 15, 1951, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he grew up in New Jersey.
He graduated in 1969 from Northern Highlands Regional High School in New Jersey.
Mr. Scarfato and his future wife, Elaine, met on Cape Cod in 1972, and they married in Marion, Mass., in 1974.
He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, the ocean, fishing, watching football and baseball, playing chess, and his granddaughter, Alexandria.
Mr. Scarfato was preceded in death by his father, Anthony Joseph Scarfato. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Elaine; two sons, Christopher and Jason; his mother, Loretta Scarfato Ashworth; two brothers, Tom and Tony and his wife, Linda; one sister, Lori; his granddaughter, Alexandria Lynn; one nephew, A.J. Scarfato and his two children, Joey and Kaley; and a circle of friends.
Mrs. Scarfato wishes to thank the Lake County emergency crews, the doctors and staff in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit at ORMC, and her family and friends for their prayers, love and support during this difficult time.

Sgt. 1st Class Arthur Lee Kessinger Jr.

PONCHATOULA, LA. - Sgt. 1st Class Arthur Lee Kessinger Jr., 32, a native of Jonesboro, Ga., died unexpectedly Feb. 24, 2010, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, La. A funeral service was held Feb. 27 at Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home in Hammond, La. Interment followed at Rose Memorial Mausoleum, with full military honors.
Sgt. 1st Class Kessinger was a 1995 graduate of Ponchatoula High School, and was active in the National Guard for 13 years, having served in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ruby and Buzz Wall, and Cecelia and Clark Kessinger. He is survived by his wife, Stephanie DiPalma Kessinger; his parents, Arthur Lee Sr. and Sandra Kessinger of Deltona; two sisters, Selena Russo and her husband, Stephen, and Kristina Maxey and her husband, Aaron; and nieces and nephew Madison Maxey, Makenzie Maxey and A.J. Maxey. He is also survived by his girlfriend, Stacey Groves.

Born on Aug. 30, 1937, Mr. Roberts moved to this area 47 years ago from his birthplace of Cincinnati.
He was a member of the Christian Church at DeLeon Springs, and enjoyed fishing, and watching NASCAR.
Mr. Roberts served honorably in the U.S. Navy.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Joan C. Roberts; one son, Rob Roberts of Mitchellville, Md.; one daughter, Vicki Marpole and her husband, Tom, of DeLeon Springs; two brothers, Richard Roberts of DeLeon Springs, and Ronald Roberts of Baltimore; and two grandchildren, Alex Marpole and Ryan Marpole.

Born in New York City, Mr. Chillemi was the head golf professional at DeLand Country Club.
He served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years.

Mr. Cohen retired as a fern grower, and also worked as a commercial fisherman, carpenter, prison guard, and cattleman. Born in Seville, he was a lifetime resident of North Central Florida.

DELAND - Betty D. Haverty died peacefully Feb. 18, 2010. A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 1, at Lankford Funeral Home, 220 E. New York Ave. in DeLand.
Mrs. Haverty retired as manager of Southridge Golf Course, having worked there during the 1970s and 1980s.
She enjoyed playing golf, bowling, and volunteering as a pink lady at West Volusia Memorial Hospital in DeLand. She will be missed by her family and many friends.
Mrs. Haverty was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Ray, and two sons, Buzzy and Bobby. She is survived by one daughter, Dee McKee and her husband, Ted, of Port Orange; one son, Raymond P. Jr. and his wife, Connie, of Tallahassee; and four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, who knew Mrs. Haverty fondly as “Grandma,” “Grandma Chipper” and “Great Chip.”

APOPKA - Don Avery Phillips, 68, died Feb. 21, 2010, after a sudden illness. Gene Houser will officiate at a memorial service at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 26, at The Sanctuary, DeLand Church of God, 401 E. Taylor Road in DeLand.
Mr. Phillips was employed at DeLand Nissan for the past 17 years.
He loved life, and attributed this love to the many blessings in his life. He was a loving husband and father, and devoted himself totally to his family, faith and work. He was happily married for the past 43 years, and took great pride that his home was one filled with love. He was a loyal friend and dedicated employee, and was known for his integrity in business. He expected the same from those who worked with him.
Don rededicated his life to Jesus in his mid-40s. In addition to his family, he considered this to be the most important blessing and accomplishment in his life. He became a tireless Christian disciple and servant. A top priority in his life was evangelization and helping those in our world who are less fortunate. He was committed to spreading the Gospel and love of Christ to everyone he encountered.
Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his father and mother, Avery and Pamela Phillips; one daughter, Laurie Lombardo; and one grandson, Justin. He is survived by his wife, Perk; four children, Dykey Phillips and his wife, Tia, Keven Phillips, Donda Blair and her husband, Tony, and Barry Phillips and his wife, Donna; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles; and his DeLand Nissan family.

Herschel Foster Hogan

DELAND - Herschel Foster Hogan, 73, died Feb. 16, 2010, at Florida Hospital-Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach, following heart-surgery complications, with his family by his side. A funeral service was held Feb. 20 at Stetson Baptist Church in DeLand.
Born on Nov. 15, 1936, in Sanford, Mr. Hogan moved to Daytona Beach at the age of 3. He graduated in 1954 from Mainland High School in Daytona Beach, where he was an outstanding athlete, lettering in football, basketball, baseball and track. He earned a scholarship to Florida State University, but decided to get married, and moved back and was married in December of that year.
He played football at Stetson University, until they dropped the sport the next year. He then played semiprofessional football with the Daytona Beach Thunderbirds for six years.
After leaving Stetson, Mr. Hogan worked as a glazer for Pittsburgh Paint and Glass, working his way up to manager, and transferring to Fort Lauderdale. Missing his hometown, he moved back to Daytona Beach and started Hogan Glass, where he worked until his retirement in 1999.
He was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, radio-controlled planes, traveling, and spending time with family. Later in life, he took up powerlifting, and held the world record for bench press in his age group. At the age of 65, he was still able to bench press 500 pounds. He was a mentor to young kids, had many friends, and loved helping others in need. He thoroughly enjoyed life, and was a kind and giving man. So many lives have been touched by his generosity and love through the years. All who knew him would agree that he was the best husband, father, son, son-in-law, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, friend and papa.
Mr. Hogan was preceded in death by his father, Fred Sr., his mother, Margaret, and one brother, Fred, who was a longtime football coach at Seabreeze High School. He is survived by his high-school sweetheart and devoted loving wife, Wathena Moremen Hogan; three sons, David and his wife, Susan, of Adel, Ga., Bob and his wife, Debbie, of DeLand, and Ric and his wife, Nikki, of Daytona Beach; three grandchildren, Lee of San Diego, Amber of Montgomery, Ala., and Taylor of Daytona Beach; one sister, Katherine Mann; and three brothers, Frank and his wife, Charlotte of Ocala, Jamie and his wife, Phyllis, of Daytona Beach, and Bruce and his wife, Dianna, of Daytona Beach.

Born in Chicago, Mr. Sireno was a sundries salesman.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

Vivien Wright Torrey

ORANGE CITY - Vivien Wright Torrey, 85, died Feb. 16, 2010. A private memorial service will be held March 13.
Born in La Grange, Ga., in 1924, Mrs. Torrey was a registered nurse in her early life; a wife, a mother, an English teacher and a university administrator in her midlife; and a memoirs writer, gardener and avid reader in her late years.
She graduated in 1945 from Piedmont Hospital Nursing School, and worked part time as a nurse at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Wash. She also attended college at Cheney, and became a 1949 summa cum laude graduate, with a Bachelor of Arts in English. She moved to Berkeley, Calif., in late 1949, and worked as a nurse in doctors’ offices until 1954, when she moved to Mountain View, Calif.
In 1967, Mrs. Torrey graduated from San Jose State University with a master’s degree in English, and a community-college teaching credential. She taught freshman English on a temporary, part-time basis, and, from 1968 to 1970, she worked as an administrative assistant in the executive vice president’s office at San Jose State. Two years later, she served as a special assistant to President John Bunzel at San Jose State, until she retired in 1980.
She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi honorary society, and was a Mayflower descendant and member of the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants.
Mrs. Torrey was the mother of David J. Nylen of Gilroy, Calif., and Dr. William R. Nylen of Stetson University in DeLand. She was the grandmother of Alexander Nylen of Gilroy, and John and Russell Nylen of DeLand. She is also survived by her husband of 38 years, Donald R. Torrey, who is an electrical engineer, retired from Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space Co. in Sunnyvale, Calif.
