DELAND - Elizabeth Ann Thompson, 65, of Chris Avenue, died July 1, 2008, at the West Volusia Hospice Care Center in Orange City. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 5, in the West Volusia Hospice Care Center chapel, 1625 Veterans Memorial Parkway in Orange City, with Chaplain Andy Pollock officiating.

Mrs. Thompson was self-employed in the home-health-care industry. She moved to this area in 1986 from her birthplace of Manchester, N.H.

She was a member of the Elks Club and Moose Lodge, and enjoyed oil painting, cooking, and her family.

Mrs. Thompson is survived by two daughters, Cathi Montgomery of Orange City, and Marlene Scofield of Bedford, N.H.; and two grandchildren, Kyle Montgomery and Cody Montgomery, both of Orange City.

DELAND - Mary Lou Stallings, 82, of West Wisconsin Avenue, died June 28, 2008, at Ridgecrest Health and Rehabilitation Center in DeLand. A funeral service will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, at Constantino Funeral and Cremation Services, 935 E. New York Ave. in DeLand. Interment will follow in Oakdale Cemetery on West Plymouth Avenue in DeLand.

Mrs. Stallings was employed by National Life and Accident Insurance Co. in Tennessee, and, for more than 20 years, as a private secretary for Carlton Fillauer of Fillauer Orthopedics and Prosthetics, also in Tennessee. Born in Sulphur Springs, DeKalb County, Ala., she moved to this area in 1982 from Chattanooga, Tenn., bringing her sister, Melba, who had cerebral palsy, to live with her and another sister, Wilma Chesley.

She was a member of Lookout Valley Baptist Church in Chattanooga, and enjoyed crafts.

Mrs. Stallings is survived by one sister, Wilma Chesley of DeLand; one brother, retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Donald R. Stallings and his wife, Juanita, of Alexandria, Va.; one niece, Teresa S. Stratton of Youngsville, N.C.; and one great-nephew, John Mark Stratton of Norfolk, Va.

DELAND - Milton J. Seilkop, 97, of Fullerville Road, died June 27, 2008, at Florida Hospital-DeLand.

Mr. Seilkop retired in 1966 as a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service after 36 years. Born in Elwood, Ohio, he moved to this area in 2001 from Cooper City.

He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in DeLand, and enjoyed woodworking, fishing and golfing.

Mr. Seilkop is survived by one son, Ronald of East Liverpool, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, Fred, David, Sharon, Johnathan, Christopher, Timothy, Thomas, Molly, Meaghan and Daniel; 16 great-grandchildren, Christina, Mary, Rachael, Mariah, Victoria, Isabel, Jennifer, Thomas Jr., Ryan, Debi, Casandra, Meaghan, Katalina, Samara, Caroline and Wyatt; and three great-great-grandchildren, Abigail, Emily and Elena.

Mrs. Knight was a homemaker. Born in Hammond, Ind., she moved to this area 13 years ago from Hastings.

She was a member of Stetson Baptist Church in DeLand, and enjoyed fishing and camping.

Mrs. Knight is survived by her husband of 13 years, Robert; four sons, Todd Walden of St. Augustine, Mike Walden of Green Cove Springs, and Jimmy Knight and Robert Knight Jr., both of DeLand; four daughters, Pam Davis, Lorie Heinrick and Kimberly Clark, all of DeLand, and Diane Denton of Tallahassee; one brother, Morris Livengood of Delaware; three sisters, Faye Parrish of Wildwood, and Katie Bright and Jenny Sutton, both of Statesboro, Ga.; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

DELAND - Ofelia Hernandez, 97, of Armstrong Avenue, died June 28, 2008, at the Alliance Center for Health Care in DeLand.

Mrs. Hernandez was a homemaker and a seamstress. Born in Cuba, she moved from New York City to Florida in 1975, and from Lake City to this area in 2007.

She loved sewing, cooking, and being a mother.

Mrs. Hernandez was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Tomas. She is survived by two daughters, Susan Hernandez of DeLand, and Ophelia H. Salazar and her husband, Julio, of San Francisco; one brother, Oreste Montero of Cuba; two grandchildren, Carmen Marla Royals of Lake City, and David T. Salazar of New York City; and one great-grandson, Joshua T. Royals of Lake City.

Sallee Hardy

DELAND - Sallee Hardy, of Secluded Oaks Trail, died June 24, 2008, at her home.

Mrs. Hardy was a journalist, beginning her career writing a weekly column for the Erie Dispatch about activities at Maryhurst Seminary for Girls. She was employed by the Associated Press, and the National Association of Home Builders magazine, and was the founding editor of the Housing and Urban Affairs daily newspaper. For several years, she wrote the “History Is Alive” column for The Daytona Beach News-Journal. Born in Pittsburgh, she moved to this area in 1990.

She was active with the League of Women Voters, serving as president of the Chelsea-Greenwich Village league. She served as a nongovernmental observer for the International Association for Religious Freedom at the United Nations for five years; was employed by Democratic Headquarters for the Lyndon B. Johnson Campaign; worked on the staff of Sen. Joseph Clark, a Democrat from Pennsylvania; and served as an assistant to Dr. Leo Szilard, one of the fathers and a critic of the atomic bomb, helping to sort his records before moving to California from Washington, D.C.

Mrs. Hardy was a board member and past president of the West Volusia Historical Society, and was named a West Volusia Historian of the Year. She was a life member and former board member of the Orange City Library Association, a former president of the Orange City Cemetery Association, and a board member of the African American Museum of the Arts in DeLand, and volunteered for the American Cancer Society Research for Recovery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Neal J. She is survived by one son, Scott L. Bashaw; two stepsons, John Hardy and Van Hardy; one grandson, Kyle Bashaw; innumerable friends, including Joanna McNeese, who provided for her care; and her cocker spaniel, Sir Winston.

DEBARY - Wendell Gardner, 77, of Wood Hollow Road, died July 1, 2008, at his home. A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Monday, July 7, in the West Volusia Hospice Care Center chapel, 1625 Veterans Memorial Parkway in Orange City.

Mr. Gardner owned Pat and Wendy’s Restaurant in Fox Lake, Ill. He moved to this area in 1977 from Illinois.

He was a former member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars in DeBary, and enjoyed fishing, spending time outdoors, and sharing good times with his family and friends.

Mr. Gardner served in the U.S. Navy.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia M. Klein Gardner. He is survived by one son, Kenneth and his wife, Kathy, of Lindenhurst, Ill.; one daughter, Tricia White and her husband, Sean, of Deltona; one brother, Kenneth Paxson and his wife, Billi Jo, of Port Isabel, Texas; one sister, Roberta Page of Victorville, Calif.; and four grandchildren, Alex White and Lauren White, both of Deltona, and Brett Gardner and Daniel Gardner, both of Lindenhurst.

Mrs. DeGuglielmo retired as an electronics assembler. She moved to this area in 1989 from her birthplace of Lawrence, Mass.

She enjoyed crossword puzzles, sewing and cooking.

PORT ST. LUCIE - Betty W. Woods, 96, a former resident of DeLand, died June 26, 2008, at her niece’s home in Port St. Lucie. Calling hours will be 6-8 p.m. today, Monday, June 30, at Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home, 126 E. New York Ave. in DeLand. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, at Ponceannah Cemetery on State Road 42 in Paisley.

Born in Plant City, Mrs. Woods was a nursing assistant at a nursing home.

She was Christian.

Mrs. Woods is survived by one brother, Ephren Widden and his wife, Joyce, of Lady Lake; two sisters-in-law, Julia Widden of West Palm Beach and Grace Widden of Georgia; and several nephews and nieces, including Gidget Wheeler, who provided for her care.

DELAND - Robert Stephen Shelford, 79, of East Howry Avenue, died June 23, 2008, at the West Volusia Hospice Care Center in Orange City.

Mr. Shelford retired from the State of New York after 18 years. In New York, he worked as a newspaper reporter, legal editor, public-information director, and publisher of a weekly newsletter on government activities, and he was a prize-winning and published poet and an adjunct instructor at Daytona Beach Community College in DeLand. Born in New Jersey, he moved to DeLand in 1985 from upstate New York.

He was active with the Capitol Hill Choral Society, the Public Relations Society of America, the New York State Government Public Relations Society, and the Lake Onderdonk Improvement Association in Westerlo, N.Y. He was an active member of the Florida, Pennsylvania and West Virginia state poetry associations, First Florida Poets in DeLand, the Orange City Grateful Group, Friends of the Stetson University School of Music, and Sequitur.

Recent books written by Mr. Shelford include Poetry Mechanix and Toolbox, the novel Ergot Orange, and Odd Forms and Light Verse and Sonnet Variations, both of which he published with his DBCC students.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Elizabeth “Liz.” He is survived by one daughter, April G. Shelford of Washington, D.C., one sister, Jeanne Stolz of Lawrence, Kan., six stepchildren, 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

DELTONA - John S. Nemeth, 87, of Cooper Drive, died June 24, 2008, at his home. His son-in-law John Bier will officiate at a private family memorial service.

Mr. Nemeth retired as a purchasing agent for Ford Motor Co. Born in Detroit, he moved to this area in 1983 from Dearborn, Mich.

He volunteered with the Red Cross, teaching cardiopulmonary resuscitation, had multiple hobbies, and was active in Alzheimer’s research.

Mr. Nemeth served as a yeoman first class in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Philippines.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Clara; one son, David of Fresno, Calif.; three daughters, Terry Tidd of Deltona, Nancy Bier of Traverse City, Mich., and Karen Blakely of Fort Myers; one sister, Margeret Nemeth of Deltona; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; special caregivers Andrew, Deanna and Helena; and his beloved pets.

DELAND - Alice G. Fairfax, 92, of North Stone Street, died June 23, 2008, at Ridgecrest Health and Rehabilitation Center in DeLand. Final services and interment will be held at a later date in Cambridge, Mass., with Spears Funeral Home in charge.

Born in Cambridge, Mrs. Fairfax was employed by the FBI in Washington, D.C. She had many opportunities to travel and relocate as a child, wife and mother, living, in addition to DeLand and Washington, D.C., in White Plains, N.Y., Long Island, N.Y., Teaneck, N.J., Chicago and Cleveland.

It has been said she was a hardworking woman, who proved to accomplish anything she set her mind to do.

Mrs. Fairfax was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. William E., and one grandson, Lloyd Wheaton Jr. She is survived by two daughters, the Rev. Gladys A. Wheaton of Cambridge, and Doris Niederhelman of Holly Hill; three sisters, Marie Davis of Watertown, Mass., Phyllis Randolph of Decatur, Ga., and Helen Newland of DeLand; three grandchildren, Howard Wheaton, Nathan Byron and Jacquetta Byron; several sisters-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

ORANGE CITY - Walter Donald Wassell, 69, died June 20, 2008, in Houston. Calling hours will be 1-2 p.m. today, Thursday, June 26, at Volusia County Baptist Church, 261 S. Orange Ave. in Orange City. A funeral service will follow at the church at 2 p.m. June 26, with the Rev. John Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in Boynton Beach Memorial Park, with military honors provided by the U.S. Air Force.

Born in Waynesboro, Va., Mr. Wassell retired as a chief master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force after 24 years.

He enjoyed hunting and camping.

Mr. Wassell is survived by his wife of 47 years, one son and daughter-in-law, one daughter, and two granddaughters.

Mr. Rodriguez was a wardrobe dresser at Broadway shows in New York City. He moved to this area in 2005 from his birthplace of New York City.

He was a member of Wardrobe Local 764-IATSE in New York City. He enjoyed Broadway shows, ballet and reading.

Mr. Rodriguez is survived by two sisters, Nilsa Torres of Tobyhanna, Pa., and Jenny Mistretta of Rockville Centre, N.Y.

ORANGE CITY - Steven Gerald Premo, 58, died June 22, 2008, at Florida Hospital-DeLand. A memorial service will be at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at Oasis, 1330 E. Taylor Road in DeLand.

Mr. Premo was employed by the City of Sanford in the reclaimed-water division. Born in Des Moines, Iowa, he moved to DeLand in 1982.

He graduated in 1969 from William Penn High School in New Castle, Del., and attended the University of Delaware.

Mr. Premo loved fishing, sailing, boating and dancing, but mostly, he loved his family, and his two dogs, Penelope and Buddy. It has been said he will be remembered as a generous man, who was always willing to lend a helping hand.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence; two brothers, Michael and Joseph; one sister, Clare Carmine; and one daughter, Renee. He is survived by two daughters, Michele Premo and Sarah Premo, both of DeLand; his mother, Shirley Premo of New Castle; two sisters, Kathleen Barbato and her husband, John, and Kelly Heckert, all of Bear, Del.; one brother, Jeffrey and his wife, Linda, of Seaford, Del.; and one granddaughter, Kayla Premo of DeLand.

Mrs. Patterson was a homemaker. Born in Plymouth, Pa., she moved to this area in 1960 from Birmingham, Ala.

She was a member of Stetson Baptist Church in DeLand, the DeLeon Springs Garden Club, and Daughters of the American Revolution, and was a 1966 Pillsbury Bake-Off finalist.

Mrs. Patterson is survived by one son, John L. of DeLeon Springs; one daughter, Susan Carpenter of Valrico; two sisters, Hilda Brizzy of Plymouth and Florence Brizzy of Shickshinny, Pa.; and three grandchildren, Jennifer L. Carpenter, Sandra C. Carpenter and Pierce N. Patterson.

DELTONA - Horace Johnson, 71, of Laredo Drive, died June 20, 2008, at his home.

Mr. Johnson retired as an automotive technician after 38 years.

He was a member of St. Clare Catholic Community in Deltona, the Knights of Columbus, 3rd and 4th degree, serving in their color guard, and Volusia County Sheriff’s Citizens on Patrol (COP), and enjoyed playing cards and fishing.

Mr. Johnson served in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Anita; two sons, Wayne of Goodlettsville, Tenn., and Dale of Mystic, Conn.; two daughters, Karen Applebec of Melbourne and Robin Hamel of Hopewell Junction, N.Y.; one brother, Gary of Texas; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

She is survived by three sons, Robert E. and his wife, Debra, of Tampa, and J. Born in Sanford, Mr. Hendricks was a tree-trimmer.

He enjoyed reading. It has been said he was a great uncle, who enjoyed playing with his nieces, Lily and Violet, and his nephew, Christopher.

Mr. Hendricks is survived by his parents, Mary Ann Serrano and her husband, Jose, of Enterprise, and John Hendricks of DeBary; two brothers, Matthew Thomas Hendricks of Eustis and Thomas Enrico Serrano of Enterprise; and one sister, Sarah Harris of DeLand.

ENTERPRISE - Carol Ann Goodwin, 65, of Madison Place, died June 21, 2008, at the West Volusia Hospice Care Center in Orange City.

Mrs. Goodwin was a homemaker. She moved to this area in 1955 from her birthplace of Philadelphia.

She was a member of Barnett Memorial United Methodist Church in Enterprise, and loved cooking, baking and crocheting.

Mrs. Goodwin was preceded in death by two sons, Lance Goodwin and Tommy Emanuel. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Harold Richard; one son, David Emanuel of Cedar Key; one daughter, Debbie Walsh of Mount Dora; one sister, Donna Belcher of Portsmouth, Va.; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

DELAND - Margaret Gibbons, 64, of Barren Oak Court, died June 22, 2008, at her home.

Mrs. Gibbons was employed at Sparton Electronics in DeLeon Springs. Born in Paterson, N.J., she moved to this area in 1981 from New Jersey.

She enjoyed reading, and arts and crafts.

Mrs. Gibbons is survived by her husband of 46 years, Ed; two daughters, Kristine Dease and Kimberly Andrews, both of DeLand; two brothers, Robert Blanchfield of California and Raymond Blanchfield of Ocala; and four grandchildren.

DELTONA - Phyllis M. Dasher, 85, of Venson Court, died June 22, 2008, at Florida Hospital-Ormond Memorial. Calling hours will be 10-11 a.m. Saturday, June 28, at Stetson Baptist Church, 1025 W. Minnesota Ave. in DeLand, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at the church, with the Rev. William Denston officiating. Burial will be in DeLand Memorial Gardens, 600 E. Beresford Ave.

Mrs. Dasher was a homemaker. Born in Vineland, N.J., she moved to this area in 1980 from Fort Lauderdale.

She enjoyed crocheting.

Mrs. Dasher was preceded in death by her husband, Wade. She is survived by four sons, Herb Christian and his wife, Lois, of Deltona, Bob Christian and his wife, Jane, of Jewett, Texas, Holden Christian of New Smyrna Beach, and Ray Christian and his wife, Cleta, of Buffalo, Texas; two daughters, Gwen Yates and her husband, Jim, of DeLand, and Linda Stone and her husband, Dick, of Kansas City, Mo.; one sister, Dorothy Hasenauer and her husband, Bill, of Sebastian; 12 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

DELAND - Charles L. Blake Sr., 82, of East Beresford Avenue, died June 23, 2008, at Florida Hospital-Fish Memorial. Calling hours will be 1-2 p.m. Friday, June 27, at Constantino Funeral and Cremation Services, 935 E. New York Ave. in DeLand. A funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. June 27 at DeLand Memorial Gardens, 600 E. Beresford Ave.

Mr. Blake retired as a tool-and-die maker, first class. He moved to this area in 1970 from New Jersey.

He was Episcopalian, and enjoyed his children, grandchildren, and racing homing pigeons.

Mr. Blake served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by one son, David C. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lois; two sons, Charles L. Jr. and his wife, Carolyn, of Lake Mary, and Darren C. and his wife, Robyn, of Deltona; one daughter, Theresa Nielson and her husband, James, of DeLand; two sisters, Hilda Druback and Evangeline Zetterberg, both of New Jersey; and six grandchildren.

DELAND - Richard Allen Palmer Jr., 58, of Melody Lane, died June 18, 2008, at Florida Hospital-DeLand.

Mr. Palmer was the owner and operator of Palmer Landscaping Inc. for 22 years. Born in Norwalk, Conn., he moved to DeLand in 1985 from New Canaan, Conn.

He was a graduate of New Canaan High School, and received a bachelor’s degree from Tarkio College in Missouri.

Mr. Palmer is survived by his wife of 37 years, Charlotte; two daughters, Brooke Palmer and Portia Wroblewski; his mother, Dorothy Palmer; one brother, David, and his children; one sister, Dede Perron, and her children; and five grandchildren, Dallas Palmer, Austin Wroblewski, Jordan Wroblewski, Tanner Birdwell and Alissa Birdwell.

The family wishes, “Dad, we hope you can ride your mower in heaven.”

DELAND - Betty Z. Linden, 81, of Grand Avenue, died June 18, 2008, at her home.

Mrs. Linden retired in 1992 as an administrative assistant at Bank of America in Fort Lauderdale after 30 years. Born in Marsteller, Pa., she moved to this area in 1992 from Fort Lauderdale.

She was Catholic, and loved to quilt.

Mrs. Linden is survived by three sons, James M. Jr. of Edwards, Miss., Eric C. of Boulder Creek, Calif., and Scott A. of Fort Lauderdale; two daughters, Tonya Minieri and Tracy Palermo, both of DeLand; one sister, Theola Forberger of Cherry Tree, Pa.; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

DELTONA - Raymond J. Wieber, 83, of East Hancock Drive, died June 13, 2008, at Florida Hospital-Fish Memorial.

Mr. Wieber was the owner and operator of Iowa Meats in Sanford for more than 12 years. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he moved to this area in 1972.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Community in Deltona, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8093 in DeBary, serving as commander for two terms, as quartermaster, and as a member of the Honor Guard.

Mr. Wieber served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Grace; one son, William of Deltona; one daughter, Nancy Mason of Charlottesville, Va.; two sisters, Ada Coker of Texas, and Marilyn Cooke of New York; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

DELAND - Evelyn R. “Lynn” Viers, 51, of West University Avenue, died June 14, 2008, at the West Volusia Hospice Care Center in Orange City. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 23, at Lankford Funeral Home, 220 E. New York Ave. in DeLand, with the Rev. Michael Fronk officiating.

Mrs. Viers worked at Stromberg-Carlson in Lake Mary for many years. She moved to this area in 1964 from her birthplace of Palatka.

She grew up in DeBary, and graduated from DeLand High School in 1975.

Mrs. Viers enjoyed making ceramics, cooking, collecting cookbooks, attending art shows, and family entertaining. She was well-known for keeping track of birthdays and anniversaries, and mailing greeting cards to friends and family to acknowledge those special days.

She is survived by her husband of 28 years, James; two daughters, Melanie Prue and her husband, Shannon, of DeLand, and Tiffany Lopez and her husband, Chris, of Umatilla; one son, Thomas of DeLand; her parents, Fred and Pat Cheney of DeBary; three brothers, David Cheney and his wife, Margie, of Shalimar, and John Cheney and his wife, Amy, and Jack Cheney and his wife, Lucy, all of DeLand; one sister, Janis Tipton and her husband, Chris, of Lake Helen; three grandchildren, Maya Prue, Zoey Prue and Christany Lopez; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; and her beloved poodle, Diana.

Mr. Rios retired as a machinist for Coca-Cola. Born in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, he moved to this area in 2006 from Miami.

He was Catholic.

Mr. Rios is survived by four sons, Al Olan and his wife, Cathy, of Fort Lauderdale, and Robert Olan, Angel Olan and Nelson Olan, all of Oakland, Calif.; one daughter, Onilda Rivera of Deltona; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

DELTONA - Maria “YoYo” Perez, 97, of Lambert Street, died June 13, 2008, at the West Volusia Hospice Care Center in Orange City.

Mrs. Perez was a homemaker. Born in Isabela, Puerto Rico, she moved to this area from New York.

She loved her church, her pastor and the congregation immensely. Her worldly favorites were “La rueda de jamon y su coco rico, dulce de kisses de chocolate, su queso blanco y su novela.” She was very involved with her family, actively helping with the care of her nieces and nephews and their children.

Mrs. Perez was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Luis Crespo, and six siblings. She is survived by one brother, Peter Perez of Newark, N.J., and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and a friend, Christina Plasencia.

Mr. Hord retired this year as a florist and fern broker, and was recognized as a top salesman in the industry. Born in Slaton, Texas, he grew up in Brownfield, Texas, and Lubbock, Texas.

He is survived by his wife, Genevieve; two sons, Stan of Nashville, Tenn., and Steve of Pierson; one brother, Tommy and his wife, Charlene, of Brownfield; one aunt, Gloria Forbus; and many nieces and nephews.

Born in Indianapolis, Mr. Harris was a truck driver.

He graduated from DeLand High School.

Mr. Harris was preceded in death by one brother, Robert D., and one sister, Susan E. Harris. He is survived by one daughter, Terry Harris of Texas; one son, Lee; five sisters, Joan Sanderson, Mary Keck, Patricia Cargle, Kathleen Harris and Tina Parish; two brothers, William and Michael; three grandchildren, Blake Harris, Courtney Heard and Tyler Harris; and numerous nieces and nephews.

ASTOR - Leon L. Gulledge, 69, died June 13, 2008, at the West Volusia Hospice Care Center in Orange City.

Mr. Gulledge retired from Rinker Materials in DeLand. Born in Clio, Ala., he moved to this area in 1957 from Alabama.

He was a member of Church of God of Prophecy in DeLeon Springs, serving as deacon, and enjoyed fishing.

Mr. Gulledge is survived by his wife of 49 years, Grace; two sons, Daniel and his wife, Lois, of Crescent City, and Rick and his wife, Kim, of DeLand; one daughter, Lisa Moore and her husband, John, of DeLeon Springs; two brothers, Charlie and his wife, Pat, of Jennings, and Curtis and his wife, Sandy, of Ozark, Ala.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

George Clark Dannals

DELAND - George Clark Dannals, 86, of Liberty Court, died June 12, 2008, at Ridgecrest Health and Rehabilitation Center in DeLand. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. today, June 19, at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 319 W. Wisconsin Ave. in DeLand, with Father W. Donald Lyon officiating.

Mr. Dannals retired in 1985 as a business and engineering consultant after 19 years. He began his career at age 17 at the Citrus Experimental Station in Lake Alfred. He was a carrier and load-control engineer with the Tennessee Valley Authority 1949-51; a rocket-development electrical engineer with Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala., 1951-54, where he was one of the first Americans to work with Dr. Wernher von Braun and his group to develop and test-fire the Redstone missile — the forerunner of the astronaut program; a ground-station data-collection engineer with Radiation Inc. 1954-57; a founding partner of Dynatronics Inc. 1957-64; and a marketing and communications-systems specialist at Page Communications in Washington, D.C., 1964-66. Born in Altoona, Pa., he moved to Winter Haven in 1928.

He attended public schools in Winter Haven, and graduated from high school in May 1939, was a pre-engineering student at Stetson University, and completed a degree in electrical engineering at Duke University.

Mr. Dannals was a longtime member of the Episcopal Church, serving on several vestries, diocesan boards and standing committees. His philanthropic and volunteer involvements included Habitat for Humanity, Stetson University, Duke University, and serving on the national board of trustees for Young Life.

In January 1986, he made an unofficial round-the-world trip for Young Life and the Episcopal Church, covering three continents and 10 countries, including the Philippines, India, Kenya, Malawi, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and France. He was able to interview Archbishop Desmond Tutu in Johannesburg.

Mr. Dannals joined the Naval Reserve in 1939, serving as a signalman on the USS NOA, out of Key West. He was called to active duty in the U.S. Navy in July 1941, completing boot-camp training at Norfolk, Va. He achieved the rank of chief in 1944, and was part of the combat air crew in Torpedo Squadron 12 aboard the USS Saratoga.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Cortez “Corky” Tedder Dannals; one daughter, Nancy Swindell and her husband, Jim; three sons, Ed Pratt-Dannals and his wife, Joanne, Jim Dannals and his wife, Carolyn, and Bob Dannals and his wife, Valerie; one brother, Bill; one niece, Barbara Furlong and her husband, Bill; 10 grandchildren, Jason Swindell, Claire Swindell, Matthew Dannals, Luke Dannals, Joshua Dannals, Christopher Pratt-Dannals, Katherine Pratt-Dannals, Danielle Merritt, Kaleigh Merritt and Mary Blair Dannals; and two great-nephews, Rob Furlong and Mike Furlong.

Mrs. Brown was a manager. Born in Antioch, Ohio, she moved to this area in 2003 from Hagerstown, Md.

She was a member of First Christian Church of Daytona Beach.

Mrs. Brown is survived by two sons, Clifford E. Minor of Huntington, W. Va., and David Minor of Edinboro, Pa., 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Barnes was a certified nursing assistant. Born in Pierson, she moved back to this area in 1979 from Lake County.

Mrs. Barnes is survived by five sons, Mike Meyer and Mitch Bischoff, both of DeLeon Springs, and Patrick Meyer, Paul Meyer and Charles Meyer, all of Lake County; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Singleton was a homemaker. Born in Wharton, N.J., she moved to this area 25 years ago from Barrington, Ill.

She loved to play golf and bridge, and, it has been said, excelled at being a great hostess at many events.

Mrs. Singleton is survived by her husband of 59 years, Jack; one son, Jack Harding Singleton and his wife, Anne, of Wellesley, Mass.; one daughter, Jill Marlene Lazar and her husband, Robert, of Howell, N.J.; and four grandchildren, Robert J. Lazar, Jack G. Singleton, Charles A. Singleton and Michael J. Singleton.

It has been said her life was her husband, her children and her grandchildren.

Mrs. Nosbisch was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Virginia King. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Douglas; one son, Douglas Jr. of DeLand; three daughters, Traci Clark of Vero Beach, and Tammy Roeling and Debra Holland, both of DeLand; three sisters, Dorothy Webster of DeLeon Springs, Lynn of New York, and Sue of North Carolina; and eight grandchildren, Christina, Robert, Lisa, Foster, Kaitlyn, Haley, Summer and Douglas III.

DELAND - Marjorie Elaine Anderson, 66, of West Wilson Avenue, died June 7, 2008, at the West Volusia Hospice Care Center in Orange City.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Mrs. Anderson retired as a teachers’ aide with Volusia County Schools.

She was a member of New St. John Baptist Church in DeLand.

Mrs. Anderson is survived by her husband, the Rev. Rudolph M. Sr.; four daughters, Donna Elaine Seaton-Byrd, Elsada Harley, Carolyn C. Baker and Cecillia White; two sons, the Rev. Rudolph M. Jr., and Randolph A.; two sisters, Rhoda Skyers and Gwendolyn “Jean” Brown; three brothers, Gladston “Roy” Bogle, Andrew “Earl” Bogle and Ashley “Bob” Bogle; 14 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and a host of aunts, nephews, cousins, godchildren and special friends.
