Christopher J. Fox
U.S. Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Christopher J. Fox graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.
Fox completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen and airwomen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Fox graduated in 2000 from DeLand High School, and received an associate degree in 2005 from Lake Sumter Community College in Leesburg. He is the son of Michelle Fox of Lake Helen.
Evan L. Strouse
U.S. Marine Corps Pfc. Evan L. Strouse recently completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, S.C., designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally.
Strouse and fellow recruits began their training at 5 a. m., by running three miles and performing calisthenics. In addition to the physical-conditioning program, Strouse spent numerous hours in classroom and field assignments, which included learning first aid, uniform regulations, combat water survival, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat and assorted weapons training. They performed close-order drill and operated as a small infantry unit during field training.
He and other recruits also received instruction in the Marine Corps' core values of honor, courage and commitment, and what core values mean in guiding personal and professional conduct.
Strouse and fellow recruits ended the training phase with The Crucible, a 54-hour team evolution culminating in an emotional ceremony in which recruits are presented the Marine Corps Emblem, and addressed as "Marines" for the first time in their careers.
He was a 2008 graduate of DeLand High School.
David F. Mercado
U.S. Army Spec. David F. Mercado has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, Mercado studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.
A 2005 graduate of Pine Ridge High School in Deltona, Mercado received a bachelor's degree in 2009 from the University of Central Florida in Orlando. He is the son of Fermin Mercado of Deltona.
Roald E. Riva
U.S. Army Sgt. Roald E. Riva was part of a support team made up of soldiers from throughout the Army for the 2010 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. The Army sponsored the nationally-televised football game played Jan. 9 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
This was the Army's 10th year as sponsor of the high-school all-star game that pits the best players in the nation against each other in an East versus West contest. The soldiers' support ranged from coordinating events with players and soldier-heroes to provide media coordination, hotel accommodations and organizing and orchestrating pre-game activities. In this year's match-up, the West team managed to outscore the East team, 30-14.
Riva, a geospatial engineer with six years of military service, is assigned to the 512th Engineer Detachment at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.

U.S. Army Pvt. Antwan L. Owens has graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga. The training consists of Basic Infantry Training and Advanced Individual Training.
During the nine weeks of basic combat training, Owens received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons employment, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid skills, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experienced use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.
The Advanced Individual Training course is designed to train infantry soldiers to perform reconnaissance operations; employ, fire and recover anti-personnel and anti-tank mines; locate and neutralize land mines and operate target and sight equipment; operate and maintain communications equipment and radio networks; construct field firing aids for infantry weapons; and perform infantry combat exercises and dismounted battle drills, which includes survival procedures in a nuclear, biological or chemical contaminated area.

Ashley L. Greene
U.S. Army Pvt. Ashley L. Greene has graduated from the Automated Logistical Specialist Advanced Individual Training (AIT) course at the U.S. Army Quartermaster Center and School at Fort Lee in Petersburg, Va.
The course is designed to train soldiers to establish and maintain stock records and other documents such as inventory, materiel control, accounting and support reports, automated and manual accounting records; perform stock record/warehouse functions pertaining to receipt, storage, distribution and issue and maintain equipment records and parts; review and verify bills of lading, contracts, and purchase orders; repair and construct shipping crates for equipment and supplies, and perform prescribed loads and shop stock lists in manual and automated supply applications.
A 2007 graduate of DeLand High School, Greene is the niece of Harriett D. Chisholm of Deltona.
Adrian A. Herzberger
Adrian A. Herzberger graduated from Officer Candidate School (OCS) Phase III training at North Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Wash., and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army National Guard. OCS students are selected, considered and drawn from colleges, active-duty and Reserve Component enlisted ranks, and direct commissionining.
The two-week Phase III training is the final phase of a three-phased, 14-month training period. The National Guard officer-candidate received basic soldiering instruction in leadership, professional ethics, soldier team development, combined arms tactics, weapons defense, squad drill, intelligence, land navigation, maintenance, communications, staff and general military subjects, field-training exercises, and physical training and conditioning.
Officer candidates are tested and evaluated in leadership skills and team work abilities required of a commissioned officer. Students utilize acquired skills to function in leader and follower positions in squad and platoon-sized elements in a stressful and demanding field environments involving various tactical situations.
The second lieutenant will serve as a member of a designated unit in the Texas Army National Guard.
A 1997 graduate of Deltona High School, Herzberger has served in the military for 11 years.

Leslie L. Martin Jr.
U.S. Army Reserve Sgt. 1st Class Leslie L. Martin Jr. has returned to the United States after being deployed overseas at a forward operating base in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Operation Iraqi Freedom is the official name given to military operations involving members of the U.S. armed forces and coalition forces participating in efforts to free and secure Iraq. Mission objectives focus on force protection, peacekeeping, stabilization, security and counter-insurgency operations as the Iraqi transitional governing bodies assume full sovereign powers to govern the peoples of Iraq.
Members from all branches of the U.S. military and multinational forces are also assisting in rebuilding Iraq's economic and governmental infrastructure, and training and preparing Iraqi military and security forces to assume full authority and responsibility in defending and preserving Iraq's sovereignty and independence as a democracy.
Martin, a lead plant engineer assigned to the 490th Civil Affairs Battalion in Dallas, has 21 years of military service. He is the son of Leslie L. and Helene Martin of Lake Helen.
Samantha V. Palmer
Samantha V. Palmer graduated from the Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) Leader Development and Assessment Course, also known as "Operation Warrior Forge," at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Wash.
The 32 days of training provide the best possible professional training and evaluation for all cadets in the aspects of military life, administration and logistical support. Although continued military training and leadership development is included in the curriculum, the primary focus of the course is to develop and evaluate each cadet's officer potential as a leader by exercising the cadet's intelligence, common sense, ingenuity and physical stamina. The cadet command assesses each cadet's performance and progress in officer traits, qualities and professionalism while attending the course.
Cadets in their junior and senior year of college must complete the leadership-development course. Upon successful completion of the course, the ROTC program, and graduation from college, cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army, National Guard or Reserve.
Palmer is a student at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

U.S. Navy Lt. Phillip A. Boyer has reported to the College of Naval Command and Staff at the Naval War College in Newport, R.I. At the college, Boyer will attend a multidisciplinary program designed for U.S. Naval and Coast Guard officers in the grade of lieutenant commander; U.S. Marine Corps, Army and Air Force officers in the grade of major, and civilians of equivalent seniority from various federal agencies.
This intermediate-level course provides a professional military-education program wherein students prepare for increased responsibilities as commanders/lieutenant colonels and as junior captains/colonels. Military students are selected to attend the College of Naval Command and Staff by their respective services.
The college curriculum is based upon three core courses of study, which include strategy and policy, national security decision making, joint maritime operations and an electives program. The courses in these four areas are designed to provide depth and perspective to the study of conflict, its causes and resolution.

Its distinctly Navy flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a sailor.

Rymn J. Parsons
U.S. Navy Reserve Capt. Rymn J. Parsons has graduated from the U.S. Army War College Department of Distance Education program at Carlisle Barracks in Carlisle, Pa. The college is the Army's senior educational institution.
The two-year program is equivalent to the college's one-year resident program that prepares officers of all U.S. military services, as well as civilian officials of the federal government, to serve in top-level command and staff positions with the U.S. Armed Forces worldwide.
Parsons completed the Army's highest level of formal education which prepares selected individuals to assume operational and strategic leadership responsibilities in military and national security organizations. The curriculum trains students to better grasp the fundamentals of war and obtain a broader and deeper understanding of the reasons why people fight, nature of conflict, and the conduct of war at the strategic level. Students study and confer on the great problems of national defense, military science, and responsible command, and upon graduation earn a master's degree in strategic studies.
A staff judge advocate with the Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Reserve Component Command, based at the Naval Station, Norfolk, Va., Parsons has served in the military for 24 years.

U.S. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael J. Yunik recently completed Naval Nuclear Power Training Pipeline.
During the course with Nuclear Power Training Unit in Ballston Spa, N.Y, Yunik received instruction about nuclear theory, chemistry, physics, reactor operations, safety and security. Upon completion of the course, Yunik qualified as a naval nuclear operator.
A 2005 graduate of Winter Park High School, Yunik is the son of Wendy J. Yunik of Deltona, and Joel M. Yunik of Linesville, Pa. He joined the Navy in May 2007.
Gregory L. Earl
U.S. Army Pfc. Gregory L. Earl has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, Earl studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

Richard Breeze
U.S. Navy Seaman Apprentice Richard Breeze recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.
During the eight-week program, Breeze completed a variety of training, which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.
The capstone event of boot camp is Battle Stations. This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. Battle Stations is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of honor, courage and commitment. Its distinctly Navy flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a sailor.

Jessica T. Nicholson
U.S. Coast Guard Reserve Seaman Jessica T. Nicholson recently graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, N.J.
During the eight-week training program, Nicholson completed a vigorous training curriculum consisting of academics and practical instruction on water safety and survival, military customs and courtesies, seamanship skills, first aid, fire fighting and marksmanship. A major emphasis is also placed on physical fitness, health and wellness.
Nicholson and other recruits also received instruction on the Coast Guard's core values — honor, respect and devotion to duty — and how to apply them in their military performance and personal conduct. Nicholson will join 36, 000 other men and women who comprise Coast Guard's force.
Men and women train together from the first day in the Coast Guard just as they do aboard ships and shore units throughout the world. To reinforce the team concept, Nicholson and other recruits were trained in preventing sexual harassment, drug and alcohol awareness, civil rights training, and the basics of the work-life balance, as well as total quality management.

Roman A. Manuel

Stephen D. Lawson
Marine Corps Pvt. Stephen D. Lawson recently completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, S.C., designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally.
Lawson and fellow recruits began their training at 5 a. m. by running three miles and performing calisthenics. In addition to the physical-conditioning program, Lawson spent numerous hours in classroom and field assignments which included learning first aid, uniform regulations, combat water survival, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat and assorted weapons training. They performed close order drills and operated as a small infantry unit during field training.
He and other recruits also received instruction on the Marine Corps' core values — honor, courage and commitment, and what the core values mean in guiding personal and professional conduct.
Lawson and fellow recruits ended the training phase with The Crucible, a 54-hour, team evolution culminating in an emotional ceremony in which recruits are presented the Marine Corps Emblem, and addressed as Marines for the first time in their careers.

Austin J. Saylor
U.S. Army Reserve Pvt. Austin J. Saylor has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga.
During the nine weeks of training, Saylor received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.
