■ FIRST REPORT
At 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, police receive the first reports of a truck stolen some minutes earlier from a construction area on the Stetson University campus in DeLand. Callers say the man who stole the truck had been holding a knife to his neck and another to his stomach.
■ AT WOODLAND AND BERESFORD
Driving south on Woodland Boulevard, the suspect stops the stolen truck at Beresford Avenue, where he attempts to carjack a different vehicle, police said. He beats on car windows with a meat cleaver and tries to get into cars, but the drivers speed away.
■ AT ABC FINE WINE & SPIRITS
The suspect gets back into the Stetson University truck and continues south on Woodland Boulevard. At ABC Fine Wine & Spirits in the 1400 block, he commandeers a gray vehicle at knifepoint, after blocking the driver’s path with the stolen truck.
■ AT RACE TRAC
The suspect pulls into Race Trac at 2080 S. Woodland Blvd. Armed with a knife, he runs up to an unoccupied vehicle, but then gets back into the gray car and continues driving south.
■ AT THE SHOPPING CENTER
The suspect drives the gray car recklessly through the parking lot of the West Volusia Regional Shopping Center. One shop employee said she feared he would crash through the store window.
■ ON ORANGE CAMP ROAD
In the 100 block of East Orange Camp Road, the suspect rams a red Ford Taurus with the gray car, then pulls the driver of the Taurus out of her car at knifepoint. The driver’s 10-year-old son is in the car.
■ IN ORANGE CITY
Orange City Police officers traveling in an unmarked vehicle see a red car with front-end damage speeding south on U.S. Highway 17-92, swerving in and out of traffic. They follow it, with emergency flashers on.
■ AT ENTERPRISE ROAD
After speeding through a red light at Enterprise Road, the red car turns left into Four Townes Shopping Center, hitting a car northbound on U.S. Highway 17-92 and spinning into the grass near the shopping-center entrance. Police see the 10-year-old boy exit the wrecked red vehicle and run from the car, waving his arms.
■ AT THE SHOPPING CENTER
Police see the suspect, also, exit the red Taurus and run across the parking lot near Stacey’s Buffet. The suspect reaches into a Dodge Dakota pickup, pulls an elderly man out, and jumps in the vehicle. Police park behind the pickup and yell at the suspect, commanding him to stop and to exit the vehicle. Instead, he smashes the truck into the officers’ unmarked car, nearly runs over a police officer, and crashes into a small yellow car. Orange City Detective Sgt. Jason Sampsell fires at the suspect.
■ LAST REPORT
Nine minutes after the first report, at 12:54 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, a report is made of shots fired in the Four Townes Shopping Center parking lot. The suspect, later identified as 20-year-old Daniel P. Hendricks, dies after being rushed to Florida Hospital-Fish Memorial.
