Recognition from one's peers is a wonderful thing, and DeLand attorney Theodore Small earned some in August, when the American Bar Association presented him with the Presidential Citation for outstanding pro bono service.
Hometown recognition is even sweeter, and Small got that, too, at the Oct. 7 DeLand City Commission meeting, when the city presented Small, a DeLand native, with a certificate of recognition.
The city hailed Small's long-standing commitment to pro-bono and public-service work in the community, during 20 years of practice in labor and employment law, as well as Small's dedication to helping the elderly and the homeless.
Small serves as a member of the American Bar Association's Commission on Homelessness and Poverty, as well as the ABA Standing Committee on Pro-Bono and Public Service Work.
Small told The Beacon, "I was so honored to be supported and surrounded by a great gathering of friends and family."
He said he accepted the certificate not just for himself, but "on behalf of the many unrecognized pro bono lawyers and legal assistants who volunteer their legal skills to represent those who cannot afford to pay for reasonable access to our justice system. Repeated studies show that over 80 percent of the legal-services needs of poor Americans go unmet."
The recognition is timely, he said, because the 2013 National Pro Bono Week is being celebrated Oct. 20-26. Small said those interested in volunteering or in need of legal services can check events posted at www.probono.net/celebrateprobono/event-map.
