The moon laughs and whispers, ‘tis near Halloween. [unknown author]
On the weekend before this All Hallows Eve
The Athens great line up will make you not want to leave.
With Rocky, The Beatles, and a street festival
There’s no question which local theatre is the best of them all.
On Oct. 25, 26 and 27, the historic Athens Theatre is offering something for the whole family. On First, on Oct. 25, the Absent Friends return for their Halloween weekend run of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” at the earlier 9 p.m. time.
Next, on Oct. 26, 3-8 p.m. we will shut down West Indiana Avenue for Boo Bash, a free family friendly Halloween festival.
That same day, at 7:30 p.m., Allengang Entertainment is back by popular demand with their Beatles tribute band, Beatles Express, and then, as soon as “The Beatles” clear the stage, the Absent Friends are back for their 11:30 p.m. “Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
Then, on Oct. 27, Beatles Express will be back for one final matinee performance starting at 2:30 p.m.
The Athens Halloween weekend would not be complete without its new “Rocky” tradition. The Absent Friends brought the cult classic “Rocky Horror Picture Show” to the Athens for the first time last year at Halloween to sell out audiences, and since then has returned almost every other month. An adaptation of the 1970’s British classic, this film is replete with live actors, props, dancing, what some say are the best Rocky sets pieces they’ve seen, and audience participation. The film’s plot revolves around a newly engaged and admittedly naïve couple (Brad and Janet) who get stranded on the side of the road and seek refuge in the nearby castle of a strange yet interesting Dr. Frank-N-Furter. From there the story becomes increasingly more ridiculous, raunchy and above all fun. The audience is encouraged to come in costume, sing along with the songs, dance the dances, and utilize their approved audience participation props. (Any unapproved props will be confiscated at the door.) (Must be 18 or over to attend.)
Even though “Rocky Horror” is becoming an annual event, the theatre wanted to start a family friendly DeLand tradition (as Rocky can hardly be considered child appropriate), and after months of brainstorming and tireless planning, we are proud to bring our town Boo Bash. This free street festival will have a stage set up in front of the old courthouse, and will feature 4 local bands: at 3:00pm, the Baby Boomers’ 10 piece band will play classics from the 60’s and 70’s; at 4:15pm the award winning band Traditions play all of some of your favorite country tunes; Shades of Grey don the stage at 5:30pm playing more great classic rock numbers; last, at 6:45 we are proud to present a town favorite, Beartoe, performing their versions of classic rock favorites and original tunes as they do across Florida and the east coast. Boo Bash will also have food provided by Brian’s Bar-B-Que, a beer garden, a large Kids Zone (made possible by Kemp Realty), street performers, a corn hole contest with great prizes, pumpkin painting, costume contests, mascots, and so much more!
With all of this going on, we still wanted to make sure that we were offering something for everyone, and who doesn’t love The Beatles? So, we asked Allengang Entertainment to bring back Beatles Express, a professional tribute band that performed at the Athens last November to sell out audiences. This great tribute band will make you want to “Twist and Shout” as they re-create the look, style, and sound of the most famous rock and roll band in the world: The Beatles. These four talented musicians create a totally self-contained theatrical experience that takes you on a musical and visual trip back to the 60's with 3 costume changes highlighting each era from early mop-top, to middle Sgt. Peppers, and finally to psychedelic and the final years. Each classic hit song is performed with vintage instruments that authentically capture the sound that changed popular music forever. Beatles Express is comprised of world class musicians who are veterans of the cast of Beatlemania, Legends in Concert and Disney's "British Invasion Band" at EPCOT. They have performed for crowds of thousands all over the world. You won’t be able to stop yourself from singing and dancing along as they perform all of your favorite Beatles songs.
The Athens Theatre is located at 124 N. Florida Avenue, DeLand. Parking is Free. Advance tickets for “Rocky horror Picture Show”are available for $12 or $15 with a bag of approved props and for $2 more at the door.
