Investigators from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission and the Department of Environmental Protection are wrapping up an investigation into improper waste disposal at a chemical plant just west of DeLand.
FWC spokeswoman Katie Purcell confirmed Oct. 2 that an investigation is ongoing at Thatcher Chemical Co., 245 Hazen Road, and should be completed soon.
An initial report by Department of Environmental Protection investigators concluded the company was not following standard operating procedures for management of solid and liquid waste.
A confidential source told The Beacon Sept. 30 that neighbors of the plant complained that toxic matter released in the air was causing things to rust, and that numbers of dead birds are found regularly around the plant.
Thatcher manufactures a number of industrial chemicals.
