The DeLand High School JV football team evened their record to 1-1 with a solid win over Seabreeze 20-7. The Bullpups will face Spruce Creek at home at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, at the Sperling Sports Complex.
Seabreeze opened the scoring with a 14-yard pass and a good kick for the point after the touchdown. However, that would be the last time the Sandcrabs would get close to the goal line.
After the Seabreeze score, DeLand would rattle one off during the first three periods to finish with a 20-7 victory. DeLand's first score was set up with a 65-yard pass from Randy Jemison to Stephon Bruten. Jordan Wilson then got the next two calls to gain the touchdown, followed by him running in during the point-after attempt for 2 points and an 8-7 lead.
In the second quarter, Jemison passed to Wilson for a 30-yard touchdown, but this time the pass for 2 points did not cross the goal line. Earlier that period, DeLand had a touchdown pass called back.
The third quarter found Cody Collins intercepting a Seabreeze pass with a 25-yard return to set up another Wilson touchdown run of 1 yard. This time, the kick attempt for the point-after did not go through the uprights.
Leading down in ground yardage was Wilson with 10 carries for 50 yards and Nyjel Shipman with five carries for 48 yards. In the passing part of the game, quarterback Jemison was four for 50 for 110 yards. The top receivers found Bruten getting one for 65 yards and Wilson gathering in two for 41 yards.
On the defensive side of the game, Cody Collins led the way with six tackles, with one being for a loss and an interception with a 25-yard return. Just behind Collins was Josh Helmadollar with six stops.
