Be ready to run for your lives, DeLandites.
Zombies will arrive in DeLand Saturday, Oct. 26, for the second annual Brain Chase 5K Zombie Run.
The undead monsters will visit the historic Stetson University campus, chasing down survivors to benefit the School Supply Program sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Volusia & Flagler Counties.
The Zombie Run is a service project of the Young Lawyers Division of the Volusia County Bar, and it's all for fun and good works.
"Last year, we had a tremendous success with our inaugural Brain Chase 5K Zombie Run," representative Amanda Jacobsen said.
The 2012 event raised more than $5,000 to benefit the Great Kids Explorer program.
This year, the Jewish Federation's backpack program is the recipient. The program will provide school supplies and brand-new backpacks to local children who need them, regardless of race or religion. All proceeds of the Zombie Run will go to the 16-year-old program.
The Young Lawyers are looking for race sponsors to join the ranks of PNC Bank, which has already taken the $2,000 "Beating Heart" sponsorship.
Other levels of sponsorship include "All the Brains You Can Eat" for $1,000, down to the "Cup of Blood" level for $100. Sponsors are invited to supply goody bags, snacks, beverages and trophies. All levels of sponsorship will be recognized.
For more information or forms, contact the Bar Association at 386-253-9471. Sponsors must register by Sept. 1.
Runners are also invited to take part. Zombie Run participants can register and come dressed either as zombies — the undead — or as survivors. The survivors will be given a few minutes' head start; then the zombies will come after them. The chase will be on.
"Only the fast will survive," organizers warn.
Register by Saturday, Sept. 28, online at www.run4acause.org/brainchase. For a paper registration form, call the Volusia County Bar Association at 386-253-9471, or send an email to email@example.com
Entry costs $15 through Saturday, Sept. 28. Entries received Sunday, Sept. 29, through Monday, Oct. 14, will cost $20. After that, the cost goes up to $25 through Friday, Oct. 25.
From 4-7 p.m. Oct. 25, entry packets will be available for pickup at Planet Fitness, 348 E. New York Ave. in DeLand. Registration will be available there, too.
Participants who wait until race day, Oct. 26, will pay a $30 entry fee. For children younger than 13, the cost is $10.
So, get registered early, and show up at the outside of the Stetson University print shop at 421 N. Woodland Blvd., where the race begins at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26. Plan to be there early. The first 200 participants will get a custom shirt.
