UPDATE 5:45 p.m. — The Sheriff's Office reported late this afternoon that Marcus Lewis has been captured in Putnam County. Case closed.
REPORTED EARLIER — The Volusia County Sheriff's Office wants to find 22-year-old Marcus Lewis, a Tomoka Correctional Institution inmate who played hooky from his work-release program, and has been on the loose since Saturday, June 15. Lewis and another inmate left the facility on Tiger Bay Road for their day jobs at a McDonald's in Daytona Beach June 15, and both were fired when they showed up for work two hours late. The pair didn't return to the work-release program at their scheduled time, triggering a search.
The second inmate subsequently returned on his own, while Lewis has remained at large.
Lewis has been serving a 30-month sentence for a burglary and grand-theft conviction in Putnam County, and was set for release in October.
Officials, unhappy with Lewis' taking a self-approved early release, got an arrest warrant charging him with escape, a second-degree felony. Now, they want to find him and serve the warrant.
Lewis, who had been living in Palatka before his incarceration, was born Jan. 5, 1991. He's 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighs approximately 160 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes. He has tattoos on his left arm and neck.
The Sheriff's Office asks anyone with information on Lewis' whereabouts to call Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida toll-free at 1-888-277-TIPS, or send a text to TIP231. Tipsters will remain anonymous and can qualify for a reward of up to $1,000.
