Greg Gimbert doesn't give up easily. He's fought for what he believes is best for the environment and for the people in Volusia County, but he's no tree-hugging liberal.
Gimbert is the Daytona Beach man who tried — and who is still trying — to open up the trails in Tiger Bay State Forest to his pickup, and to get an area set aside for ATVs and other off-road vehicles.
He got support from the City of Daytona Beach, which, in turn, asked the County Council to send the state a resolution of support for allowing some vehicular activities inside Tiger Bay. The County Council voted March 21 to stay out of a state decision on a 5-2 vote, with only Council Member Josh Wagner and County Chair Jason Davis in favor.
Gimbert hasn't given up on Tiger Bay, he told The Beacon April 11, though he's watching to see what other possibilities might develop.
County Council Member Wagner said during a March 28 County Council retreat that he wants the county to look for another location that might work for off-roading, perhaps on county lands. He's working on that with county staff, he said April 12.
Gimbert hopes to rally support for his cause from West Volusians who enjoy the outdoors. E-mail Gimbert at firstname.lastname@example.org, or call him at 386-852-0751.
