Andrew Lloyd Webber’s beloved musical Cats is not typically attempted by most local community theaters. The Sands Theater Company however found itself in the enviable position of having a rich talent pool and knew the time was now. Opening at the historic Athens Theatre in Downtown DeLand April 5 for 10 performances, they are drawing from three Central Florida counties; with actors, dancers and singers coming from Orange, Flagler and Volusia counties.
Based on T.S. Eliot's Old Possum's book of Practical Cats, Cats was a cultural phenomenon, which set long-run records both in London (21 years) and on Broadway (18 years). It has been translated into more than 20 languages, and continues to be performed all around the world. The songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber, most notably "Memory," have transcended musical theater and become popular standards.
The talent does not end on the stage. From the choreography, musical direction, set design and costuming, director Clark Adams has assembled a group of artistic professionals that will wow our audience.
“In researching the various national tours around the world, we realized we could adapt the set to our own locale.”
Using the Dutch version for inspiration, Adams thought a more fantastical setting was needed, and since both the Volusia County Fair and the Cole Bros. Circus are based here in DeLand, we chose to set the Jellicle Ball in an amusement park/circus bone yard with discarded clown cars, circus wagons, and even a Ferris wheel.
Be our guest for the annual Jellicle Ball, a reunion of Jellicle cats where the eldest of this special breed, Old Deuteronomy, seeks to select which of the many cats in the neighborhood will be reborn to begin another life. Potential candidates named Jennyanydots, Rum Tum Tugger and Bustopher Jones plead their case. Ultimately, it is Grizabella and her plea for a new life that wins the old cat over.
The show is directed by Sands’ Artistic Director Clark Adams, with musical direction by Julia Hood, choreography by Simone Boos and costumes and production design by Kim Crayne.
Cats is performed at the historic Athens Theatre located in Downtown DeLand.
