Heavy investment by the City of DeLand and the energy of a new director are paying big dividends at Chisholm Community Center, where membership has skyrocketed, and classes that range from after-school tutoring to Zumba are filled to capacity.

"We're bursting at the seams. It's a good problem to have," center Director Nichole Bonds said.

Volunteers are getting ready to plant spring crops in a community garden behind the 30-year-old center, and a new swimming pool is under construction nearby.

At a recent Family Night Out, more than 150 people attended to share a meal and play games.

Read all about how the center is bringing the community together, and about the improvements the city has made, in Jen Horton's full story in the March 21-24 Weekend edition of The Beacon. Did ya ever put 200 goldfish in a bowl built for two?

There are 7 billion wonderful humans on this earth right now...and we are running out of resources.

Anyway lotsa luck with your center...and do not look at the statistics

Why do anonymous commenting people make rude statements, especially against an excellent part of Deland’s Department of Recreation park system?

Many people of all ages, ethnicity and income use this place. Kids have a place for socializing and experiencing life. If the children and young adults did not have this in the community, they may decide to do criminal things. When that happens, that’s when taxpayer dollars start to kick in full force. No one wins.

Some participants are living alone and this place is good for their entire being otherwise they may fall into depression. The center participant adult can stimulate their mind, body and socialize with others of all ages.

This is a win- win situation for all. Do you know how much it costs in dollars, police work time used to arrest an idol kid?

We are getting a real punch for our tax payer dollars, especially as long as there are centers where people can socialize, have mental stimulation, healthier bodies and just good old fashioned togetherness the community will thrive. Thank you for having this center, it is a real gem.

Eliminating as many as I possibly can !

What we need is a "Humane Society" for humans, with free spay/neuter programs.

Even animals raise their young to be self-sufficient

Heavy investment means.......taxpayer money thrown at a "vision" by a politician looking for a pat on the back.

Yeah, yeah, yeah......we will all hear about how if it saves ONE person from the street, it was well worth it.

BS, when you need to "save" hundreds from the street.

BLAME the parents.
