No relief in sight for gas pains at the pump in Volusia County

Pain at the pump — Gasoline prices rose sharply recently in West Volusia, as this sign at a DeLand convenience store illustrates. The price is about 12 cents higher than the average in the third week of February, and it is 47 cents higher than the state average in January.

The cost of driving has risen sharply since the first of the year, and AAA Auto Club South spokeswoman Jessica Brady sees gasoline prices heading for a major benchmark.

"Right now, it looks like the prices are going to continue high through the end of this month and into March," she told The Beacon. "It's likely we will see $4 a gallon in the near future."

She said prices at $4 already appear in a few places in South Florida.

At this writing, the average price of a gallon of self-serve unleaded regular gasoline in Volusia County is just under $3.90, according to the AAA, which also reports the average price throughout Florida is $3.88.

@ John

People that care about what is left of the planet are not idiots. You can hug a gas pump while I hug a tree..dummy

Dummys that really care about Nascar, Motorcycles and football are dummys because none of that really matters.

The best part of the superbowl was when the lights went out...so energy spoiled americans could sit in the dark where they belong. OMG those poor over entertained idiots had to endure a half hour of not being entertained...IMAGINE that.

I love it when dummys like you complain about high prices but are too ignorant to realize it comes from high energy costs to a large degree.

Energy addicted slow minded americans deserve high energy prices ,it will tone down their arrogance as they work 2 days a week to compensate for energy costs.

You will see more americans at bus stops on bicycles and scooters you can HUG that Fact.

Go hug a gas pump as it sucks your thin wallet dry...little boy. Imperial america is going broke as it deserves...hug that fact ..boy.

Americans can lose some weight walking to work part of nature's weigh loss plan.

When you fill up next time remember I am laughing at you and hugging a tree.

Sorry Morton but you sound like a tree hugging idiot. Until wind and solar are ready and economical to use we need to locate and produce oil so we can keep the prices down.

Maybe Volusia County can repeal the 5 cent a gallon gasoline tax, which wasn't supposed to added to diesel but was, they imposed years ago that even they claim isn't raising enough money to do the road improvements is was supposed to pay for. I always make it a point to fill up in Sanford even though it doesn't save a lot I'd rather give Seminole County the tax money than the crooks in Volusia.

Prices will continue to rise so long as we all pay the price. The oil companies don't care about us grumbling, or picketing, or any type of 'protest.'

People said they wouldn't buy more gas when it hit $2, then again at $3, now over $4 and in some places across the country nearing $5!

It's basic economics. Sell for the highest price you can. Until people actually stop driving as much and the oil companies stop seeing record profits, the price will go higher and higher.

Get ready for $10 a gallon, friends! It's coming sooner than you think!

Americans are getting EXACTLY what they deserve...when it comes to energy prices no question about it. We all want cheap energy but forget about geology and reality.

We have had cheap energy for far too long actually...stop and think about it....SOMETHING has to give.

The days of cheap energy are over, we have 6.5 billion dangerous mammals (humans)devouring oil that took million of years to form.

Okay....where does it stop ...when I-4 is double decker and eight lanes?? When Mexico City has 30million instead of 20million amigos?

This cheap energy ride is OVER...if we have so much oil then why are oil companies drilling in 10K feet of water at over one million dollar per day cost for an exploratory well??

Oil companies are building 15 drillships at 600M a copy right now...WHY? Because we have so much oil...NO...because the world is devouring so much oil. If it were not for the oil companies we would all be walking NOW.

Okay ...zipperheads...research Rigzone.com and look up day rates and employment.

There is short term profiteering and speculation of course...but long term we are SCREWED. Ask a geologist where oil comes from do the research....Fossil fuels..get it?

You know how much fuel you have in your tank but do you know how old it is and how dependant we have become on it?????

Where is the outrage? No boycotts or marches or revolt? Then I guess everyone's ok with these gas prices. Carry on...

It was interesting in the Summer of 2008 when gas hit record highs. Everyone blamed Bush and his Big Oil cronies for high prices at the pump. Where is the outrage at Obama over these prices or are we still blaming "W" five years later? ----Just wondering!

Gas prices are being manipulated by the people who trade the commodity and the futures markets for the commodity. According to numbers of news and information sources on all sides of the spectrum the price increases we are experiencing are about greed. The only way to fight these higher prices is to park your car and take a bike or walk.
