Area churches plan all kinds of activities

Seniors luncheon

Plymouth Avenue Christian Church in DeLand, across from DeLand High School, is having a Seniors Luncheon and concert by Hope Street at noon Monday, Feb. 18.

Brian’s Bar-B-Que is catering, and the cost of the meal is $5.

A freewill offering will be collected for Hope Street.

Joint Ash Wednesday service

At 6:30 p.m. Ash Wednesday, Feb. 13, First Congregational United Church of Christ of Lake Helen will have a joint Ash Wednesday service with Lake Helen United Methodist Church.

The service will be in the UCC Parish House at 107 N. Euclid Ave. in Lake Helen. A soup-and-sandwich supper will be served at 6:30 p.m., followed by the Ash Wednesday service of the ashes.

On becoming a saint

Bill Lazarus will speak on “The Real Valentine (and other would-be saints)” at the 10:30 a.m. service Sunday, Feb. 10, at First Unitarian Universalist Church of West Volusia in DeLand.

St. Valentine’s Day reminds us of the saints who dot the calendar. This talk will look at how someone becomes a saint, the many strange saints in history, and the real saints in our lives — the ones outside religion.

Bill Lazarus is a historian, a renowned religious scholar, and one of the most popular speakers at the church. He offers thoughtful insights on religion and the world, always accentuated with humor.

Religious education for children of all ages is provided during the service.

New outdoor service

Heart of Christ Christian Church has added a new service on the property the church owns at 1150 W. Rhode Island Ave. in Orange City.

“Worship in the Woods” is an outside service held at 4:30 p.m. the last Sunday of each month. Attendees should bring lawn chairs.

Regular Sunday-morning services are at Gateway Center for the Arts in DeBary at 10:30 a.m.

Strawberry Festival

The annual Strawberry Festival at St. Jude’s Episcopal Church in Orange City is coming Saturday, March 16.

There will be spaces for vendors to sell their merchandise or advertise their business. These spaces, which are 10 feet by 10 feet, can be rented for a donation of $25. Tables are not furnished by the church, and no food is to be sold at vendor areas unless it is packaged for home use.

Mosaic Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Orange City welcomes Dr. Don Musser to the pulpit at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 10. He will respond to an article from the Winter 2012 edition of UUWorld magazine titled “The End of iChurch,” which is available online.

Don’s message is titled “Tensions Between Self and Others: Is a New UU Narrative Needed?”

Liz Schumaker is the worship leader. A children’s program is offered during the service.

Mosaic’s Social Justice team will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, in the church’s Fellowship Hall. The group is planning a fundraising event to benefit The Neighborhood Center of West Volusia, in addition to the congregation’s ongoing efforts to feed the hungry and support the children and families of Orange City Elementary School.

All are welcome to attend.

On marriage

The Thursday, Feb. 14, video presentation at the Lifetree Cafe, a ministry of Episcopal Church of the Holy Presence, will be “Is Marriage Obsolete?: Why More People Are Saying ‘I Don’t.’” The presentation is 7:15-8:15 p.m., and includes a time for discussion.

On Tuesday, Feb. 12, church members will prepare and serve a pancake dinner in celebration of Shrove Tuesday, also known as Fat Tuesday, 6-7 p.m.

On Feb. 13, the community is invited to take part in the imposition of ashes to begin the season of Lent at the Ash Wednesday Service at 7:15 p.m.

Bible Study on “Journey With Apostle John” is 6:45-8 p.m. Wednesdays.

On Sunday, Feb. 17, the Right Rev. Gregory O. Brewer, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese, will be celebrating Confirmation and Holy Communion. The Rev. Dawn McDonald and the Rev. Neville Crichlow will be assisting. All are welcome to attend the service, which begins at 10 a.m. The nursery will be available. Fellowship will follow the service.

Disciples Men’s Breakfast

Chaplain Art Bakewell will be leading the 8:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. services Sunday, Feb. 10, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of DeLand.

The Disciples Men’s Breakfast will be at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in the Fellowship Hall. The youth of the church will be sponsoring a Valentine Social 7-9 p.m. that same day in the same location. Light refreshments and music will be provided.

The church’s Ash Wednesday service will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 13. A light supper will be served in the Fellowship Hall at 6 p.m. prior to the service. To make reservations, call 386-734-0677.

The Rainbow Child Care Center will have a Spaghetti Dinner 5-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15. It will be eat-in or takeout. The cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children, and $1.50 for toddlers. To purchase tickets, call 386-736-3768.
