Here are a few names that have been in the news lately:
Saunders - DeLand's Pop Saunders is now attending classes at Tennessee State University, where he will have two years remaining to play football. His first two seasons ended recently with the University of Florida Gators. His new team is expected to use his talents at several positions.
Johnson - Former Stetson University Hatter baseball standout Chris Johnson will be playing the 2013 season closer to his old Melching Field at Conrad Park. He was recently part of a seven-player deal that sent him from the Arizona Diamondbacks to the Atlanta Braves.
Being a third baseman, Chris will have the opportunity to step into the spot opened when area favorite-son Chipper Jones retired at the end of the 2012 season. Maybe Chris will be here to throw out the first pitch for the Hatter opener with St. Joseph's Feb. 15.
Stingrays - The South Daytona Stingrays 11U baseball team is looking for a couple of players to round out a very strong roster. The coaching staff includes two high-school-level coaches. It is a competitive travel team that tries to stay within the East Florida and Central Florida area.
