News image

BEACON PHOTO/AL EVERSON
Grim and graphic — Deltona Alliance Church Assistant Pastor Juan Sali looks over a display set up in observance of the 40th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade ruling, which legalized abortion. The church sets up the banner and crosses each January to mark Sanctity of Life Month. Since the Supreme Court’s landmark decision Jan. 22, 1973, an estimated 55 million abortions have occurred in the U.S.

The pageant is an exhibit of crosses, each in a floral arrangement inspired by an assigned Bible verse.

The displays are set up for viewing by the public noon-3 p.m. Palm Sunday at the Garden Club clubhouse on the corner of South Alabama and East Beresford avenues in DeLand. There is no charge to view the designs, and there will be music and refreshments.

Navajo ethics on the environment

Mosaic Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Orange City welcomes Dr. Robert Tucker to the 10:30 a.m. service Sunday, Jan. 27, to speak on the topic “Navajo Ethics.”

Jan. 31 marks the 137th anniversary of the day in 1876 when all Native Americans were ordered to move onto reservations.

Dr. Tucker will consider why Western religious heritage fails as the basis for sound ecological practice.

Using the Navajo as an example, he will explore some of the valuable insights on environmental stewardship reflected in Native American ethics. Andy Bowen is the worship leader.

A children’s program is offered during the service. Learn more by visiting the church’s website at www.mosaicuuc.org.
