Get out your leashes and dress up your pooch, because the Krewe of Amalee’s 15th annual Mardi Gras on MainStreet Dog Parade is just around the corner.

The Krewe of Amalee never disappoints with the yearly event that brings thousands of canines and people to Downtown DeLand. This year’s theme is “The Wizard of Paws.”

Floats, bands and (of course) dogs will travel down Woodland Boulevard at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26. The judging of parade entries will take place at 9:30 a.m. at University Avenue.

In addition to the parade, visitors can join a Mardi Gras celebration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on West Indiana Avenue that will feature activities for dogs and children, vendors, a children’s play area, live music and adoptable pets, among other offerings. Admission is free.

Prizes will be awarded for best dog costume, best sports-themed dog costume, most original dog costume and best dog-and-owner look-alike costume. A doggy king and queen will also be

Krewe of Amalee is a charitable organization that supports nonprofit organizations in West Volusia. Members Kara Hoblick and Tina Houck are the co-chairs of this year’s Mardi Gras event.

For more information, or to register your dog or a float to participate in the parade, go to www.dogparadedeland.com. While dogs will be allowed to register on the day of the event, floats and other entries must be registered by Jan. 22.
