Doubleheader basketball, Atlantic Sun Conference-style, was staged here in the Edmunds Center for the Stetson Hatter women's and men's teams Jan. 5, with the same pattern of play set for today, Monday, Jan. 7.
On Saturday, the Hatter women (10-4, 3-0) opened with a 71-57 win over the University of North Florida Ospreys (6-8, 2-1).
The Hats never trailed in this one, with SU head coach Lynn Bria having high praise for the defensive play of her team. Shanasa Sanders tallied 22 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while Sasha Sims chipped in with 11 points. SU also held a 35-31 edge off the glass.
None of the visitors managed double figures. Shayla Wilson was the leader with nine, while Jadhken Kerr picked off eight rebounds.
Today, the Hats will host the Jacksonville Dolphins at 3 p.m., followed by the men's teams taking the court at 5:15 p.m.
Against the Ospreys, the Hatter men played even terms, but were unable to overcome the 47-31 halftime lead by the visitors.
Parker Smith poured in 33 for the UNF (7-9, 2-1), with Travis Wallace accounting for 23. Andy Diaz and Beau Beech added 12 and 11, respectively.
The game was tied 24-24 with 7:26 left in the half when the Ospreys made a closing 19-7 run for the spread at the intermission.
Adam Pegg's 19 points keyed the Hats, with Chris Perez nailing 17. Willie Green, with 16, and Aaron Graham, with 14, followed.
