Firefighters from the County of Volusia, Orange City and the Florida Forest Service spent the weekend before New Year's containing a blaze that consumed around 30 acres near Orange City.

Beacon reader Jeffrey Ault was able to get photos of the fire.

The fire, at the end of Wisconsin Avenue, south of State Road 472, started Dec. 29, mostly around a dry lake bed. Firefighters were able to protect nearby homes, county spokeswoman Pat Kuehn said, with no damages reported.

The fire was contained the next day, though firefighters continued to monitor the site daily at least through Jan. 2, in case of flare-ups.

The fire's cause is unknown.

Fire Departments will need to develop prescribed burn plans for land owners and use the man power not going on medical emergencies by burning to prevent very large and dangerous fires, or have we forget the late 1990's fires.

Fl has been burning for 10s of thousands of years. Natures way of nutrient cycling to feed the new spring growth. Even the Native Americans used it as a soil enrichment pratice 500 yrs ago.

Read the article in the Florida Ag paper this month entitled "Prescribed Fire", a tool for natural resource and wildlife conservation.

When nature burns, a rebirth occurs.
