It was so close for the Stetson Hatter basketballers here Dec. 9, but the visiting Florida International University Golden Panthers held on for an 82-79 non-conference victory in the Edmunds Center.
The loss was the fifth-straight for the 2-6 Hatters, who next will be playing at Richmond University Saturday, Dec. 15. Their next clash in the Edmunds Center will be Saturday, Jan. 5, with the University of North Florida Ospreys in town for an Atlantic Sun Conference encounter.
Against FlU (3-3), the Hats stayed close most of the way, trailing only, 36-31. The locals rallied after the break and took a 56-55 lead, with 10:25 remaining. The game was tied, 69-69, with 2:23 remaining before the visitors inched away.
Chris Perez paced a balanced SU attack with 22 points, while Adam Pegg nailed down his first double-double of the year, with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Willie Green and Hunter Miller each chipped in with 12 points, while Joel Naburgs added 10.
The visitors had 6-2 junior Malik Smith from Boston coming off the bench to net six of 12 3's, along with nine of 11 free throws, to account for 29 points in 30 minutes of playing time.
