Former DeLand High School Bulldog and Stetson University Hatter head basketball coach Murray Arnold, 74, died here Tuesday, Nov. 13.
Arnold coached the Bulldogs to the DeLand High's lone state championship in boys' basketball, in 1963, compiling the impressive record of 27-3.
He enjoyed a colorful career of more than 40 years in coaching, including stops in the collegiate and professional ranks. His three seasons at Stetson, 1997-2000, closed out his active coaching days, but he still remained close to the game.
During his coaching days at Birmingham Southern, Chattanooga, Western Kentucky and Stetson, Arnold recorded a 420-229 record in 22 years at the four schools.
At this writing, there had been no announcement about funeral services, but it may be listed with the obituaries.
(Editor's note: The Sport Spotlight column for the next edition of The Beacon Monday, Nov. 19, will be in connection with coach Arnold.)
