Word has come down from the governor: Newly elected Volusia County Chair Jason Davis will take office more than a month ahead of schedule.
Volusia County spokesman Dave Byron said Gov. Rick Scott wanted Davis and newly elected District 4 representative Doug Daniels sworn in Dec. 6 rather than at the prescribed Jan. 10 organizational meeting.
The two men will fill two vacant seats on the seven-member County Council. Chair Frank Bruno had to resign effective Nov. 5, because he was running for a state Senate seat, and District 4 representative Carl Persis had resigned in June, because of the requirements of his retirement pension.
Persis was also a candidate for chair, but lost the race to Davis. Bruno lost the District 8 Senate race to Dorothy Hukill.
Two more new County Council members were also elected Nov. 6, but won't be sworn in until the meeting on Thursday, Jan. 10. Pat Patterson, who served on the County Council 1995-98, will resume his old District 1 seat, and Deb Denys will be sworn in as the representative for District 3.
Meanwhile, County Council incumbents Josh Wagner, who represents District 2, and Pat Northey, who represents District 5, were re-elected. At-large County Council Member Joyce Cusack was the only one of the seven whose seat was not up for election this year.
The public is welcome to witness the swearing-in of Davis and Daniels during the meeting at 9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, in the Frank T. Bruno County Council Chambers in the Thomas C. Kelly Administration Center at 123 W. Indiana Ave. in DeLand.
After he is sworn in, Davis will preside over the meeting.

You are incorrect. You are what's wrong with the world. Your condescending tone and the "if you don't like it get out mentality" is what got us in this mess in the first place.
You need to rethink your definition of lazy. Voting early is the complete opposite of being lazy. Since when is doing something before it is due considered lazy? The correct definition is proactive.
Opening up extra early voting days would have saved me a 3 hour wait in line here in Deland. If you think people weren't turned away from that then you have your view of the world severely distorted. People like myself work multiple jobs, just to make ends meet, can't take a day off.
Rick Scott changed the rules to early voting to have less days and less places to vote. He allowed only government buildings to house the machines, thus creating 2-4 hour wait for early voting.
Absentee voting is not an option, it just gives elections department more of a chance to discount your vote.
The jury is out to determine what type of job Davis will do. Though, this is not an attempt to put someone in early. It is an attempt to replace those who left office early. Again, who better than the individuals who actually got elected for that position?
There is a need to fill the vacancies left by Bruno and Persis. Bruno had to resign the run. Persis had to resign to maximize his government pension. You can't have the seats be left empty.
So, the individuals elected by the people seem like better choices than someone else, don't ya think?
Some people find a reason to criticize without thinking things through.
Hopefully the election of Mr Davis is a first step on the road to stopping all the ridiculous wasteful spending by Pat Northey and the rest of the liberals on the Vol. Co. council.
Who needs Team Volusia INC. ...we already have an Economic expensive development council. Team Volusia INC gets government money and pays no taxes....it is anothet NON PROFIT Gamer.
Who needs the Volusia County Cultural Council...we already have the ECHO givaway system.
Pat Northey's friends at the Gateway Center for the Arts in Debary just got ANOTHER $27,941 dollar GIFT from the taxpayers thru the Volusia County Cultural council. Cha Ching...real businesses are barely keeping their doors open...yet non profit parasite businesses get from MONEY from the welfare council.
Honest taxpaying businesses get NOTHING from the County but tax bills...while NON PROFIT parasite Arts and Culture bums get free welfare money EVERY YEAR.
Ask Pat Northy why she appoints the same old woman to the Volusia County Cultural every year. Ask Pat Northey how long she and that same old woman were on the Gateway Center for the Arts board at the same time.
Ask Pat why the Daytona Beach News Journal gave $50,000 to that same non profit organization in Debary and how she voted when the Daytona Beach news Journal got $1.7 million for thier Lively Arts center. Ask Pat Northey why these Arts organizations get FREE MONEY as the school system goes broke...go ahead ask Pat her number and email is right on the Vol.Co. website under common politicians.
If you are too LAZY to get out in 8 DAYS before the election or on election day (NOTE - THAT IS NINE DAYS!!!!!) then you don't deserve the right to vote.
I have been voting for over 30 years and have NEVER had a problem voting, even when the only time to vote was on election day. Early voting is just pandering to lazy people.
You sir are a disgrace to what America stands for, personal responsibility.
You should renounce your citizenship and leave.
