For the first time in several weeks, since the Florida Collegiate Summer League completed its season, the sound of wooden bats echoed from Melching Field at Conrad Park Oct. 20.
The Stetson Hatters hosted the Team Canada National Junior Team, and defeated their guests, 10-3. Hatter head coach Pete Dunn said he hoped to make this an annual event during the fall practice season. Upcoming, the Hatter Series will be played Nov. 8-10, with the squad divided.
The exhibition game gave the fans a look at the 26 Hatters, including 10 pitchers, who worked one inning or less. Starter Kurt Schluter opened on the mound, and was named the winner. Following were Austin Perez, Josh Powers, Cameron Griffin, Tyler Warmoth, Adam Schaly, Garrison Banas, Chad Rood, Brandon Diaz and Joe Dye.
Stetson opened up quickly on their guests, with four runs in the first inning and three in the second. The Hats added three in the fifth inning. The visitors scored twice in the eighth inning and once in the ninth.
The Hats collected 12 hits, with James Rasmussen and Konner Lutz each doubling and singling, while Garrett Russini singled twice. Mitchel Brennan rapped a triple, and had a sacrifice fly that chased home two runs. Russini and Rasmussen each drove in a pair.
The 10 hurlers combined for nine strikeouts and three walks. Perez and Banas each fanned two. Also collecting the other five SU singles were K'shawn Smith, Tyler Bocock, Brian Eggleston, Patrick Mazeika and Carlos Garmendia.
