Seminoles trip Titans

ORANGE CITY — After reeling off three-straight victories over non-district opponents Deltona, Spruce Creek and Kissimmee Gateway, the Orange City University Titans were stopped, 33-18, by the Sanford Seminoles in their District 2-8A opener on the Deltona High School field.

This week is an open date for the Titans, as they prepare for four-straight road games at Oviedo Hagerty, Flagler Palm Coast, Lake Mary and Lyman, respectively.

Seminole took a 20-6 lead at the intermission, with the Titans playing even ball in the second half.

The Titans hit the end zone in the second stanza, when quarterback Randy Cianciotto connected with Josh Diaz on a 14-yard scoring pass. Steven Chojnowski found the end zone twice in the second half on short runs of 4 yards and 1 yard.

Cianciotto completed nine of 24 passes for 79 yards, with two intercepted. He also accounted for 51 yards on the ground, with nine carries. A balanced rushing attack also listed Deon Anderson with 54 yards on seven tries, with Chojnowski and Chris Negron each with 39 yards on 12 and nine carries, respectively.

Taylor turns table

PIERSON — The Taylor Wildcat gridders went from one extreme to another in just one week.

Here on Swanson Field Sept. 14, the ’Cats dropped a 42-0 decision to the Umatilla Bulldogs, while Sept. 21, they were on the road, where they rambled to a 46-0 blanking of Jacksonville Temple Christian.

The stage is set for a special night Friday, Sept. 28, here, when the ’Cats host Jacksonville Harvest Community, which will be Taylor Athletic Hall of Fame Night, with four to be inducted.

The ’Cats posted their third win in four games, with Dexter Rodriguez reeling off 105 yards with 10 carries, including a 2-yard TD run.

Nick McClelland intercepted a pass and returned 26 yards for a touchdown, while scoring another from 18 yards out.

Quarterback Matt Henry completed three of four passes for 60 yards, including a 34-yard TD toss to Juan Barrera.

Mikey Kopka accounted for 61 yards, including a pair of touchdown efforts. Also getting in on the scoring parade was Freddy Galvan, who drilled a 34-yard field goal, plus 4 extra points.

It was also a solid effort on the other side of the ball, as the Wildcats shut down their hosts both on the ground and in the air.

Panthers get first points

DELTONA — Although the young Pine Ridge Panthers scored their first points of the 2012 football season Sept. 21, they were overpowered by the undefeated New Smyrna Beach Barracudas, 54-7.

After the hosts took a 7-0 lead, the Panthers recovered a fumble and turned it into a score, when freshman Frankie Viera scored from 2 yards, with the point after tying the score at 7-7. From that point, the ’Cudas broke loose.

The hosts used a balanced attack headed by 224 yards passing and 134 yards on the ground.

On Friday, Sept. 28, the Panthers will be hosing the Warner Christian Eagles at 7:30 p.m. In the NSB game, the Panthers had Tobias Chunn carrying nine times for 41 yards, with Brandon Barfield kicking the PAT.

DELTONA — The Deltona Wolves will be back on the road Friday, Sept. 28, seeking their first win of the season, when they visit the Spruce Creek Hawks at the New Smyrna Beach Airport Sports Complex at 7 p.m.

The Wolves were blanked by the free-scoring Daytona Beach Seabreeze SandCrabs, 52-0, in Municipal Stadium Sept. 21.

Seabreeze combined solid play on both sides of the ball, with the defense recording the shutout by limiting the Wolves to 26 yards on the ground and 30 in the air.

The SandCrabs poured 24 points home in the first period, and padded the spread to 45-0 at the intermission.

DELTONA — The Deltona Trinity Christian Eagles will be on the road Friday, Sept. 28, for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Melbourne Holy Trinity.

This will be the fourth-straight road game for the 2-1 Eagles, who will be looking ahead to three-straight home games with Warner Christian, Daytona Beach Father Lopez and Melbourne Florida Air, respectively.
