The primary dust settled, leaving two of five contenders for the District 1 seat on the County Council: Republicans Pat Patterson and Jeff Allebach. In November, voters will determine which one will take the District 1 seat, which covers West Volusia from Pierson and Seville down to the north half of DeBary.

Patterson, with 34.11 percent of the tally, was the top vote-getter in the Aug. 14 primary. Allebach came in second, with 24.11 percent of the vote.

Knocked out of the race were Missy Kelly with 20.86 percent, Ronnie Mills with 13.52 percent, and Terry Dilligard Sr. with 7.41 percent of the vote.

Patterson, of DeLand, who served in the state House of Representatives 1998-2000 and 2002-10, and who served on the Volusia County Council 1995-98, said he's ready for the race.

Asked what he sees as his advantage over Allebach, Patterson said the two Republicans are alike in some ways. The difference Patterson sees is that, "I think my thinking is a lot more global," Patterson said.

While he has the experience and know-how at the state and local levels, Patterson said, Allebach's experience has been at "the very local city level."

Allebach served on the Orange City Council 2002-09. He also overcame acute myeloid leukemia after completing his service in Orange City.

Allebach said he will have the advantage, "Because I think our message is more recent and relevant to Volusia County."

Allebach wants to streamline county operations, draw more businesses to Volusia County, and improve public safety. He'll bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm to the County Council, he said.

I say we need new blood in the county council, one who cares about us locals and is a true fighter, not a "professional" politician (been around the block and is now back) who just wants to hang his hat and draw another paycheck.

Jeff is a confused republican. I say this based on his raise taxes to expand government record in Orange City. He referred to citizens of Orange City as "Cheap" for not wanting to raise taxes more. The written minutes do not record this for his protection, but if you listen to the tapes the message is clear. More taxes for more services are good. The tapes are a public record available online.

Because of the blind-sided bickering democrats in this community who refuse to LEAD their clubs, there are NO Liberals up for this seat now. So sad, one has been and a two time loser from OC...great choices West Volusia...I am so glad I am moving to District 5.....

Allebach needs to keep his vision locally. I like that idea. Not globaly that Patterson thinks. They will be elected to serve us in Volusia county. Not globally.

no back, what folly are you speaking of? Streamline says to me 'less cost'. Don't be negative just to be negative.

All Allebach wants is the boon doggle train. he doesn't have the vision to see what this folly will cost taxpayers.
