Now it's time for voters to decide

All but one of the five County Council District 1 candidates, but only one of the three county chair candidates, attended an Aug. 3 forum at First Baptist Church of DeLeon Springs moderated by Pierson resident Cindy Todd. The DeLeon Springs Community Association sponsored a reception afterward, giving attendees a chance to talk to candidates face to face.

Present were District 1 candidates Pat Patterson, Ronnie Mills, Missy Kelly and Jeff Allebach. Terry Dilligard didn't attend.

Chair candidate Carl Persis attended, but Ted Doran and Jason Davis weren't on hand.

Now that the forums have concluded, its time for voters to face the tough question: Who will win their votes. Early voting continues for one more day, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at two West Volusia sites: the Volusia County Elections Office in DeLand and at the Deltona Regional Library.

On Tuesday, Aug. 14, the polls will be open 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

The District 1 seat on the County Council covers West Volusia from Pierson and Seville through the northern part of DeBary. As in the other nonpartisan races for county chair, and in the races for County Council Districts 2, 3, 4 and 5, if any candidate wins more than 50 percent of the vote in the primary, he or she wins the seat.

If not, the two candidates with the most votes in the primary will appear again on the ballot for the Tuesday, Nov. 6, general election.

To Native Volusian: Churches are places of assembly. If it bothers a person to see religious symbols, no worry here. All were either covered or removed. so no one could complain.

Hi, Native Volusian,

The debate for District 1 was held in DeLeon Springs because it is the geographic center of the district. It was held in a church because DS does not have any public buildings large enough for the over 100 people in attendance.

Jeff Allebach seems to be the most qualified candidate to represent all of District 1. I agree that the incumbents must go. Volusia County is wrought with back room deals and the only way to a better future is with new leadership.

What is this holding these things in a church all about? If I wanted to go to a church, I'd go, but I have no desire to go into a den of iniquity. There is a thing called separation of church and state, but it is quite obvious that these candidates have no idea what the constitution is!

You mean there are actually legal Americans still living in DeLeon Springs?
