Editor’s note: Welcome to “Campaign Diary,” a collection of election tidbits contributed by members of The Beacon staff, as we march along the campaign trail, following those who seek elected office on this year’s crowded ballots.
A number of candidates in local political races have changed their minds this year:
• David Santiago was a candidate for Volusia County Council District 5. Then, he entered the Deltona City Commision race. Finally, he switched to the District 27 race in the Florida House of Representatives.
• Pat Northey filed to run for Volusia County supervisor of elections. Then, she changed her mind and entered the race to keep her current seat, representing District 5 on the County Council.
• Steven deLaroche withdrew from a judicial race to run for clerk of the court.
• Pat Patterson planned to run for state chief financial officer, then for state Senate District 8, then entered the race for County Council District 1.
What happens to the money backers contribute to a candidate who’s running first for one office then another?
State election law says if a candidate changes races, the candidate must notify all contributors in writing, within 15 days of filing the change of race with the Elections Office.
If the contributor requests his or her money back within 30 days of the candidate’s notice, the candidate must refund the contribution.
If the contributor doesn’t ask for a refund, the candidate can and must use the money to campaign for the new office.
