NBC News has confirmed that DeLand's time in the national spotlight will come tonight, Monday, Jan. 30, during the Rock Center with Brian Williams show that begins at 10 p.m. The show, formerly called Primetime NBC, is seen locally on WESH Channel 2 (Bright House Networks Channel 4).
A television-news crew, including NBC's Kate Snow, visited DeLand Jan. 21-22, sitting down with Mayor Bob Apgar, talking to protesters at the Occupy DeLand camp at Pioneer Park, taking in the classic car show on East Indiana Avenue, and even filming the action inside Hunter's Restaurant.
The resulting television spot, titled "Road to The White House runs through Florida," explores the importance of the Interstate 4 corridor as a bellwether in presidential elections.
Much of the footage is an interview with neighbors Ken and Carmen Goldberg and Chris and Jen Ditslear, who represent differing political views, despite being friends. Snow spoke with the four on the porch of the Ditslear home in Northeast DeLand.
The spot focusing on DeLand was originally scheduled to air immediately following the Jan. 23 GOP presidential-candidate debate in Tampa. However, because the debate ran overtime, the DeLand spot was bumped to Jan. 30.
NBC senior national producer Tim Uehlinger, one of the crew members who visited DeLand, confirmed the DeLand show is scheduled for tonight's Rock Center edition. Uehlinger said the original spot scheduled a week earlier had been shortened.
"It's going to be pretty short. Maybe about five minutes," Uehlinger said.
The entire video can been viewed on the MSNBC website.
