The Mad Hatter will retire as Stetson University's mascot as of Friday, Jan. 20.
"The mascot we had was not very kid-friendly. In fact, it was kind of scary looking," said Ricky Hazel, assistant director of communications in the athletic department.
The university wants a mascot families can love, and a symbol that embraces Stetson's values and mission.
The job of designing the new mascot was open to the community, and more than 70 concepts were submitted.
On Friday, the winner will be revealed during halftime at the Stetson basketball game. The Hatters are hosting Florida Gulf Coast in the Edmunds Center, 143 E. Pennsylvania Ave., and the game starts at 7 p.m.
Ticket prices start at $8. The first 2,000 attendees through the gate will receive commemorative bandannas.
