Florida Hospital DeLand Physical Therapist Earns Elite Board Certification

Only 27 Physical Therapists in Florida Hold This Prestigious Certification

DELAND – Florida Hospital DeLand Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation is excited to announce that Lisa Grant, PT, MSPT, SCS, LAT, ATC, CSCS is now a board-certified sports clinical specialist physical therapist.

There are only 27 physical therapists in Florida board-certified as a sports clinical specialist. Board certification through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties is only granted to physical therapists once they have passed an exam showing that they are more proficient in a certain subject matter when compared to their peers.

"Many physical therapists say they treat sports injuries and practice sports medicine because they are closely linked together,” said Jill Piazza, PT, DPT. “However, there is a difference between a physical therapist and a physical therapist who is a board-certified sports clinical specialist, since the latter has demonstrated advanced competency and skill to specialize in this area.”

When treating athletes, not only does the therapist have to take into account the constraints of the healing tissue, but they also have to understand the sport and plan accordingly to the strict recovery timeline some athletes have.

"Without proper education and experience, it is difficult to know when to be more aggressive with protocols and treatment plans and when not to be. In addition, without a thorough understanding of the individual sport, physical therapists may find difficulty meeting the strict plans of the athlete," states Piazza.

Even if you are not an athlete, Florida Hospital DeLand Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation offers comprehensive rehabilitative services programs that evaluate and treat many types of injuries and other disorders.

Florida Hospital DeLand Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation has three convenient locations. Call for more information or to inquire about an appointment.
