posted Dec 10, 2010 - 12:20:47pm

The oncology nursing team at Mid Florida Hematology & Oncology haveproven two things in winning the 2010 Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation Employer of the Year Award. First, they know their stuff when it comes to treating cancer and secondly, theywork in a practice that recognizes and appreciates that.

The honor bestowed on Mid Florida Hematology & Oncology recognizes an employer for exceptional support of oncology nursing certification.

Five nurses at Mid Florida, Laura Wilken, Donna Kelley, Joelle Scharlach, Aimee Jackson and Sandy Jennings all passed their Oncology Nursing Certification, makingregistered nurses specializing in cancer care and treatment. “Our doctors provided us with many educational opportunities to prepare for the test,” explains Laura Wilken, a lead nurse at the practice. “ In addition to giving us paid time off to take the test, they also paid for off site study courses and for our certification. “

The medical oncologists at Mid Florida have encouraged all their nurses to be ONC certified. According to Wilken, “As a specialized oncology nurse, we can give our patients the highest quality care. With more knowledge in care of cancer patients, we are better qualified in the areas of patient education, side effects management, delivery of chemotherapy and emotional support. Adds Scharlach, “The first phone call I made after I found out I passed my certification was to the practice to thank them for all their support. It’s wonderful to work somewhere that values the knowledge of our field so much.”
