Great buys abound at area churches March 6
The spring season of yard and rummage sales has begun, and great buys can be had by all in West Volusia.
The Lake Helen United Methodist Church Rummage Sale will be 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, March 6.
The youth groups of First United Methodist Church of DeLand will have a Rummage Sale, also 8 a.m.-1 p.m. March 6. Available will be kitchen and other household items, clothing, books, tools, electronics, toys and Christmas decorations. Proceeds will benefit youth-group ministries and missionary trips.
Faith Lutheran Church in DeLand will have its third annual Spring Bazaar March 6. This year, the bazaar will have the usual baked goods, rummage, plants, and a carwash, along with a representative from Golden Girls, who will be on hand to buy scrap gold. Money raised this year will go to Southern Seminary to help a second-career seminary student, someone who was called late in life to the ministry, starting a second career, and to send eight youths to Luther Ridge Camp in July.
Author, storyteller and genealogist to speak
On Sunday, March 7, storyteller, author and genealogist Mary Fears will speak on “Quilts” at First Unitarian Universalist Church of West Volusia in DeLand. The service begins at 10:30 a.m., and religious education for children of all ages is provided.
Fears’ books include The Jackson-Moore Family History and Genealogy, a genealogy about her extended family; Slave Ancestral Research, It’s Something Else, which includes guidelines on how to search for slave ancestors and their slave owners; Julie’s Journey, an inspirational memoir about her daughter, Julie Anderson; and Civil War and Living History Re-enacting About ‘People Of Color,’ How to Begin — What to Wear — Why Re-enact?, a primer on re-enacting as a means of celebrating the heroic deeds of black people during the Civil War.

The Rev. Mulkey to speak at Lenten series
The Rev. Dr. Robert Mulkey of New Hope Baptist Church in Port Orange will be the Lenten luncheon speaker at noon Wednesday, March 10, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of DeLand. Dr. Mulkey was called to New Hope in August 2006, after serving First Baptist Church of DeLand for 21 years. A free lunch follows the program in the fellowship hall at the west end of First Christian Church.
The church will participate in the Ecumenical Breakfast at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 13, at First United Methodist Church of DeLand, and in the communitywide CROP Walk at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 14, at Bill Dreggors Park.
Bible Study will be in the church library at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 15.
St. Joseph’s Day celebrated
The Mike Accardi Lodge Sons of Italy will have its annual St. Joseph’s Day Brunch beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 6, at its lodge at 1270 Doyle Road in Deltona.
The cost is a suggested donation of $9 per person, and the menu will include juice, eggs, fruit, pastry, and coffee or tea.
Women’s fellowship has game day
The Women’s Fellowship of First Congregational United Church of Christ of Orange City invites the community to a Game and Luncheon Party noon-4 p.m. Saturday, March 13, in the fellowship hall.
The fellowship will provide the chicken salad, and participants are asked to bring a pie to share for dessert.

Forty-voice choir to sing
A free choral concert is planned for 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 19, at Christ Presbyterian Church in Ormond Beach.
The 40-voice choir Voices of Appalachia, which is made up of students from Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Passes, Ky., will sing.
An offering will be accepted. Proceeds will support continued opportunities to share this Appalachian heritage.
New contact number for Shabbat across America
Congregation Beth Shalom in Deltona will join thousands of other Jewish organizations in celebrating Shabbat Across America Friday, March 5.
A special visitor-friendly abbreviated service will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner and concluding prayers.
The event will take place at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in Deltona, where the temple regularly meets for services. Rabbi Winston Weilheimer will lead the service.
Shabbat Across America is a project of the National Jewish Outreach Program, and was begun in 1997 to bring together practicing and non-practicing Jews and non-Jews.

The Envoys to perform
The Southern-gospel quartet The Envoys will give a free concert at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 7, at DeLand Church of the Nazarene.
Ecumenical breakfast
The 22nd annual Ecumenical Breakfast sponsored by Church Women United of West Volusia will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 13, at First United Methodist Church of DeLand.
This breakfast has traditionally benefited The Neighborhood Center of West Volusia, with proceeds from ticket sales going to help the homeless and less-advantaged. Tickets cost $5.
