Seeking to honor a legend — Mike Williams stands at the intersection of Normandy and Saxon boulevards in Deltona. If a grass-roots group has its way, the name of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will grace a street or road in Volusia County’s largest city.
A county road honoring the renowned civil-rights leader runs along the east side of DeLand, not far from the northwest edge of Deltona, but Mike Williams wants King’s name on a Deltona thoroughfare.
Why?
“Well, because of who Dr. King was, and what he did for the country — and what he did for the world, but especially for this country,” Williams said. “Many cities have a street named after Dr. King.”
A Realtor and Deltona resident, Williams chairs Deltona’s Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration Committee. The group organizes annual programs and activities celebrating King’s life and achievements for the weekend with the federal holiday observing his birth date. Now, the committee has asked city officials to name a Deltona thoroughfare in honor of King.
The matter was first discussed before the Deltona City Commission in December, and Williams and Deputy City Manager Dave Denny have talked about it.
Denny said a process will have to be followed.
“It’s administrative action here. We’ve been calling other cities. Once we get the OK of the commission, I’ll go forward with this,” Denny said. “Then there will be a petition along that street to find out if the property owners are willing. They have to make some changes. You’ve got to notify 911, the Sheriff’s Department.”
Denny said three well-traveled roads are under consideration: the segment of Providence Boulevard between Elkcam and Howland boulevards; all or part of Saxon Boulevard; and all or part of Normandy Boulevard.
Denny said the renaming could apply to any part of a street, or the whole length of a street.
The proposal to christen a Deltona road or street in honor of King will probably be discussed in an upcoming workshop of the City Commission.
Williams said, a few years ago, he approached former City Manager Steve Thompson with a request to put Dr. King’s name on a Deltona street.
“We made mention of it to Steve a couple of years ago, and then he was let go. This is the first serious discussion we have had,” Williams said.
Thompson left as city manager of Deltona two years ago this month.
Asked if he foresees any confusion between the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Beltway in DeLand and a street with King’s name in Deltona, Williams said, “No, not at all.”

Please list in detail what rights you have lost since
Obama was elected..
Who has the most streets named after them?
Try Washington (4,974)
There must be a whole lot of old white guys wearing
white wigs running around, or it is a whole lot of farm
country?
of these posts, if we name a road after MLK, then only
people associated with him or like him(deeply religious
peaceful man) would be living on that road.
So if we named a road after Princeton, can only people
who attend Princeton University live on that road?
Or if we named a road after Reagan, can only rich, old
white guys suffering from alzheimer's live on that road?
Apparently, the idea some have presented is that if we
name a road after MLK only black, poor, criminals would
like there, I would suspect perhaps that would be the
case if the road was named Willie Horton..
During Reagan's admin, the education system was changed,
it was changed in order to Dump Down America, there is a
book written about it from a lady who served in
Reagan's education dept..Faux News is carrying on the
tradition.. Millions of people in this country should be
pissed off and suing Fox, for deliberately misinforming them on so much..
It is one thing to disagree with Obama's politics it's a whole another thing to advocate the man's death.. You do understand that the SS has or will read what you wrote, especially since I will be reporting you..
Signed, Tolerant for just about anything but hate..
Love is lacking in many of these posts, I suspect in many of their lives as well..
The "MLK Blvd is always located in the ghetto" comments are from a tired, old Chris Rock bit. Time to get some new material.
And MLK Blvd in Deland is hardly a "ghetto."
Why force YOUR wants on others to go through the mess of changing Their addresses or anythingelse for You!!.
"enough is enough, every town does not need a street named after this man.the road that runs from Deland to Orange city is close enough. To change the name of a main street here is selfish and ill advised. Why should all the people that live on this street have to change their addresses and why should we all be stuck with the costs that come with the changing of a street name.If you want to change a name of a street, change the name of one of the many un named alley's that are in town. this would be of little cost and little problems for anyone."

Urban ghetto's attract people who don't mix in and join the local family friendly culture, they divide neighborhoods and scare away the middle class and working class families and only the poor and the criminal element are left.
Deltona has no business or industry to speak of, so ending the signal that we are encouraging ghetto culture here would send this town into a sharp decline.
Deltona is a Mackle Brothers development, they named these roads, and we are proud of what they gave us. If the stupid city government moves ahead with this or any other stupid racially motivated renaming idea, we will organize a neighborhood cessation from the City of Deltona.
Tell these people to go ruin somebody-else's town!
