DeLand will start 2010 with some new jobs and a second Save-A-Lot.
In February, the no-frills grocery will open in the space in College Plaza that was vacated by Bealls Outlet. With the new store will come new jobs.
“The new store will employ 20-25 new associates,” Save-A-Lot Communications Coordinator Maureen Shannon said.
Shannon did not know the exact size of the new store, but she said Save-A-Lots are generally 14,000 square feet.
The Downtown DeLand store will not close, although the two locations, 939 N. Woodland Blvd. and 221 S. Woodland Blvd., will be just 1.3 miles apart.
“We operate nearly 1,200 stores in 39 states from Maine to California and serve more than 5 million shoppers each week,” Shannon said. “We have been in business for more than 30 years, and our commitment to Florida began 25 years ago. There are 104 Save-A-Lot food stores across the state.”
Of those, DeLand will have two.
“The downtown Save-A-Lot location will remain open,” Shannon said.
Save-A-Lot is a value-price grocery where customers bag or box their own purchases, goods are stacked on shelves still in their cardboard cartons, and nationally advertised brands often aren’t available.
The company’s regional director said the new DeLand location was identified because of the dearth of grocery stores in the immediate area.
DeLand’s north Publix was located in College Plaza until several years ago, when it moved farther north to International Speedway Boulevard. Also, the north side of DeLand lost a value-price grocery when Food Lion closed in March.
“Save-A-Lot is dedicated to supporting the community of DeLand with the opening of new food stores in neighborhoods where they are needed most, often in communities ignored or abandoned by conventional grocery chains,” said Chris Ornelas, regional director for Save-A-Lot. “This new Save-A-Lot will fulfill an important need with a store that provides budget-conscious, value-seeking shoppers with great food at great prices.”

This is good news ! any new business that provides any new job positions is very welcome. I just wonder if that parking lot can handle all the shoppers of CVS, Big Lots
& existing resturant there ? This is a PLUS for College Plaza !
