In Pierson
A Pierson referendum that was shot down by voters last year was approved this year.
Eighty-six people cast ballots for a Pierson referendum that would change Town Council terms.
The referendum was one question with two parts: Do the citizens of Pierson want to extend council terms to four years, and do they want to have elections only in even-numbered years?
At time of publication, the referendum was winning by a very narrow margin, with 49 people voting yes and 37 voting no.
Changing terms to even-numbered years could save the town as much as $5,000 per election. Local elections will now be rolled into larger elections such as presidential and gubernatorial races. The cost is deferred as the Department of Elections is required to have polling available for those races.
The item was put back on the ballot because council members thought, perhaps, the language on last year's ballot was not clear to the people.
Last year the referendum lost by 20 votes.
In Lake Helen
In Lake Helen, the elections were close.
Zone 1 was a rematch from 2007, and incumbent Ann Robbins narrowly beat her opponent, Lewis Long, for a second time.
She kept her seat by 34 votes.
In 2007, Robbins won the seat from Long with a more comfortable margin, by 144 votes, receiving 458 and Long receiving 314.
Zone 3 had two political newcomers vying for the seat vacated by Buddy Snowden. Business owner Richard Basso, with visions for possible artistic complexes within the city, swayed more votes than longtime resident Theresa Abshire. Abshire wanted to preserve the city as it was, and not make any great changes.
Buddy Snowden left Zone 3 to run, unopposed, for mayor.

My door is open.....step up to the plate.
I chose not to vote for anyone running for the Zone #1 seat for various reasons, this issue being one of them. How could anyone vote for someone that they already know is not honest?

LAKE HELEN - The majority of Lake Helen's voters gave Joan Duffy their support in the November election, and the city's new mayor wasted little time reciprocating.
Less than an hour after taking the oath of office before Thursday's regular City Commission meeting, Duffy announced to the crowd gathered at City Hall that U.S. Rep. John Mica promised to aid the city's residents in their effort to have a wall built between their homes and

After seeing the results of Tuesdays election, I am curious if there will be a third vote on the referendum;
Do the citizens of Pierson want to extend council terms to four years, and do they want to have elections only in even-numbered years?
I assume since the 30 votes that this referendum lost by last year is more than the 12 votes it won by Tuesday, we the citizens of Pierson deserve to have another chance to vote when you, the Town Council, know there will be a better turn out in a National Election.
You talk about saving money, the election Tuesday was the biggest waste of money I have ever seen, and feel it was done delibertly knowing most voters would not bother getting out to vote.
Maybe we, the people of Pierson, should pettition a referendum to place a 'term-limit' on how many terms any council member can stay in office. Wouldn't that be nice to get some fresh, honest people on our Town Council?
I certainly would not consider this a victory, just a cheap underhanded way to get what you, the Town Council wanted..... again!
Get over it...the majority rules, and you obviously are in the MINORITY !
The fish are biting, golf courses are in great shape & the beer is ice cold !
Congratulations Ann Robbins !
THANK YOU ANN ! ! ! !
