The Stetson Hatter men's soccer team gained a split here over the weekend in Atlantic Sun Conference action to clinch a top spot in the upcoming A-Sun Tournament, and, hopefully, a first-round game here.
Thursday, the Hats were blanked by the Campbell Camels, 2-0, who also secured a berth in the tournament. The winners improved to 5-0-1 in conference play and 6-7-1 overall, while the Hats stood at 4-2-1 and 10-2-2, respectively. Logan Potter recorded seven saves for SU.
Saturday night, the Hats blanked the Mercer Bears, 2-0, with keeper Potter notching his sixth shutout of the season, with two saves. Defensive efforts by Robert Hodge, Ryan Corning, Dan Sackman and Matt Hoskins kept the visitors pretty well at bay.
Senior Griffin Gilstrap of Safety Harbor netted his ninth goal of the season, while sophomore Fredrik Brustad of Oslo taIled the other. Jupiter senior Kevin Munz was credited with two assists, and Orlando senior Set Carpintero had one.
The Hatters were scheduled for a Wednesday-night match with the No. 4-ranked University of North Carolina Tar Heels in Chapel HIll, N.C., and then will close out regular-season play here at 7 p.m. Sunday on Senior Night, against Florida Gulf Coast in A-Sun play.
