The shutout streak may have been broken, but the victory run is still intact!
That's the story for the undefeated DeLand Bulldogs after Friday night's 30-6 victory here in Spec Martin Memorial Stadium over the stubborn New Smyrna Beach Barracudas.
It was victory No. 7 for the 'Dogs who were ranked No. 8 in the state among the Class 6A teams. it will be back to district action here Friday night when the Deltona Wolves invade the area for a 7 o'clock kickoff in the Battle of the Bone.
The shutout streak was snapped in the fourth period by the 'Cudas with 8:25 remaining in the game. With a fourth down and six yards to go at the DeLand 39 it appeared as though the 'Cudas might stay on the ground for a first down.
Instead quarterback A.J. Granger lofted a 39-yard scoring pass to Jeff Scofield who had slipped behind a DHS defender for the score. After three straight shutouts for a total of 15 quarters the 'Dogs had been scored on. Outside of NSB's Freddie Horne 57 yards rushing the rugged DeLand defense held the 'Cudas under control. NSB is one of the better 2-4 teams.
On the offensive side Pop Saunders tallied three times giving him 13 TDs for the season. He rambled 65 yards with a punt return and tacked on a pair of 10-yard bursts. For the night he accounted for 125 yards rushing. Although he didn't score Shontrelle Johnson rushed past the century mark again with 107 yards.
Special teams got into the act as well when the defensive unit forced the 'Cudas back into the end zone to recover a fumble for a two-point safety. Later the 'Cudas had a lateral mishandled and Dentrell Pate gobbled it up racing 27 yards for the TD.
Taylor Church and Hunter Haire each booted a pair of extra points to cap the scoring. (There will be more on the game in our Thursday edition).
Glancing at the results from our other West Volusia High Schools, only Deltona Trinity Christian was a winner as they downed Maitland Orangewood Christian, 35-5.
The Deltona Wolves, who will be here Friday night, were doubled up on by the Daytona Beach Seabreeze SandCrabs, 40-20. The Taylor Wildcats lost 31-6 at Kissimmee Gateway while Lighthouse Christian was bested on the road 43-12 in Melbourne by Florida Air. The Pine Ridge Panthers were idle.
